I’ll put a bet on UCLA or USC. A film studies program in the center of the film universe, given her internship there last summer.
I vote for USC or UCLA…maybe Stanford.
But really…I think she will go to Yale.
Moderator’s Note:
I deleted a number of posts which had nothing to do with college selection and wandered into assessing Presidential candidates. Please play nice.
Given that she visited Wesleyan and all her internships, I say Columbia or Stanford and enjoy the weather. She doesn’t need to pick a school for contacts!
She made her second trip in six months to New Haven yesterday. We will see.
Michelle recently let it slip that she’s only considering NYC schools and Columbia University’s Barnard College and NYU’s Tisch are her top choices
Hmm. I guess we’ll find out somewhere around May 1, I assume she didn’t do ED.
Her dad has some great advice going on there.
There was an act passed in, I think, 1992 where presidents would only get a security detail for 10 years after they left office. Clinton was to be the first president under that law. Then 9-11 happened. Then more. Then everyone realized that was a bad idea and they’ve reverted to continuing details until there is no need.
I know Jimmy Carter had a detail at the democratic convention in 2008. It was not the full force “the President is coming” with 8-10 armored limos, but he has a few agents, they clear people out of his way, check his room. My friend ran into him in the lobby of his hotel and chatted, but got a few evil eyed looks from the SS first. I worked in the building across from where the Obamas stay, and it was amusing watching the convoy take off. There were the big white SUVs, with what only can be described as Storm troopers hanging off the running boards and fenders (dressed in white, machine guns slung over their shoulders), then the limos, then more SUVs. And this was before he was President!
I ran into Ford skiing once. He had a detail of about 8 with him on the slopes. He was still president at that time.
I still can’t believe Malia is a senior. She was so young when Obama came into power. And they’ve kept them so out of the press that it feels like we haven’t seen them “grow up” so it’s jarring.
People get in trouble around here by referring to Barnard as “Columbia University’s…” – but interesting if its true that she prefers Barnard to her father’s alma mater. Though I think that Obama was not happy at Columbia… he was a transfer, living off campus-- and Malia’s aunt is a Barnard alum … so perhaps there is a family consensus that Barnard is the better option for undergrad.
None of us actually know what her grades and test scores are. Could be Columbia would be a reach for her in the classroom.
re: post 108-
A chairlift at Beaver Creek (Strawberry Park, I believe) used to go over Pres. Ford’s ski house.
It entirely makes sense to me that Presidents and their families would continue with Secret Service protection years after they’ve left office. I assume the likes of Chelsea Clinton and the Bush daughters are protected. The country is full of nut jobs, not to mention lots of guns.
What astonishes me is how much people know about her activities, such as internships. I’ve never seen anything like that in the media. As romani says, they have been kept out of the press to a remarkable degree.
It was in the media. Her summer job at minimum wage that lasted for about a week was in the front page. Her posh internship at some hot shot place that lasted the rest of summer following the minimum job was at a corner somewhere.
SAT scores: 2000 would be just fine. 1800 could be rationalized. Whereas Joe Blow’s kid would need 2200 to feel “somewhat safe”.
GPA: Would you give the President’s kid anything other than an A? Would you, if you were President, not make your kid get more and more tutoring if their grades slipped?
ECs: Child of a famous person is good enough there.
I agree that since his children are multiracial, as he is but the media ignores, it is possible that there is impetus to keep them out of the media more than usual.
But I also think since he is younger and times have changed, he unlike some older presidents would want his kids to have “as normal as possible” an upbringing. As normal as possible for someone who is a lawyer and married to a lawyer and has an excellent salary and money in the bank.
From what I’ve read about the Obamas, I’d bet they told every teacher to be as hard – if not harder – on their kids than other students. Also consider that they attend a private school which has kids of other politicians and celebrities. So would teachers there give the President’s kid less than an A – I think they would.
I know Malia had an overnight at Brown. Unfortunately Brown students went a little nuts and took surreptitious pictures of her playing beer pong and posted them on social media.
It was Rush Limbaugh who made the comment about Chelsea Clinton, not John McCain.
As a New York City resident I can kind of see her wanting to come here. Most New Yorkers are good at ignoring celebrities. I hope she’s happy wherever she ends up.
