Hi I’m an undergraduate student double majoring in English Literature and Jazz Songwriting in Korea.
I’m preparing to study abroad in the states for undergraduate studies and can you give me some recommendations?
I grew up here so don’t have much info about us colleges:(
I want to be a songwriter but I’m also interested in other liberal arts too.
More specifically, I would love to go to a college where I can not only focus on studying professional music(like Berklee) but also have an opportunity to take good literature classes and maybe art classes too.
I heard Sarah Lawrence is good but then I kinda feel like they’re treating music just as a hobby.
And lots of Korean artists prefer Berklee I think but Berklee seems to be too much oriented in Jazz music only.
I don’t want to be a shortsighted musician who doesn’t know anything besides music you know?
I’m really desperate…please help!!

There’s a thread on this forum just for people interested in music majors. Some LACs and universities have music conservatories: Bard, Oberlin, Johns Hopkins to name a few. Most of these focus on classical music (Mozart, Bach, etc.) University of Rochester has a variety of music traditions. If you’re interested in song writing, though, you may want to look at where your favorite musicians studied, if they went to college at all. American-influenced music around the world – jazz and pop music and rock – stems from American blues and bluegrass traditions, sometimes called roots music. That tradition comes from the American South, generally, and then developed different sounds in urban areas, like Chicago, New York. In addiition to conservatories you may find what you’re looking for in colleges in Tennessee --like Memphis or Nashville – or in New Orleans – like Tulane. In addition to NYU there are the CUNY schools. CUNY Queens has a remarkable music conservatory that’s often overlooked on this forum. The campus life, though, is not the same as at other schools. Many jazz songs are part of what’s called The American Songbook, and many were developed in the NYC area. Other schools to think about: UCLA, New England Conservatory, California Institute of the Arts, USC Thornton School.
As an international student, will you be needing financial aid? I see on your other thread you’re looking for a lovely area for college - I think Bard would fit your needs well, especially as they do give aid to international students, if you need it. Not Bard Conservatory but just the college - which has a fantastic music department and phenomenal literature & writing department. Jazz is taught in the college, not in the conservatory http://music.bard.edu/about/ There are tons of student formed music groups performing all the time on campus. All styles.
