Is the 3 year foreign language requirement strictly enforced or is it flexible? I have 2 years of h.s. spanish but I skipped spanish 1 and took 2 & 3. Would that qualify for admission?

The requirment I think you’re looking at is a graduation requirement for Pomona students…not a prerequisite for applicants.

High School Preparation

High school diploma or equivalent is not required
Required units:
English 4
Foreign Language 3
Math 3
Science 3
Science Lab 2
Social Studies 3

I got this at the collegeboard site: http://apps.collegeboard.com/search/CollegeDetail.jsp?collegeId=757&profileId=1

Oh okay. There is also a three semester of languages graduation requirment for Pomona students. I wasn’t sure if you’d stumbled upon in by accident.

I can’t specifically speak to your question. It looks like you pulled that data off collegeboard, which tends to be streamlined…so the requirement may or may not be flexible. If you want, you can wait and see if anyone else can answer your question, but I would highly reccomend browsing Pomona’s website to see if somewhere it explains the critera. You’d be even better off e-mail admissions and asking them. When I was applying, I sent a couple questions to them and they were generally friendly, helpful, and responded in a timely mannder.

My guess would be that if you’ve passed a third year language class, even if you didn’t take the original year, you’re probably okay but I think its worth verifying that with the school (as opposed to the second hand knowledge you’ll probably find here)…better safe than sorry.

I found this at Pomona’s website:
Four years of English, three years of study each in mathematics and foreign languages, and two years of study each in laboratory sciences and social sciences are expected.

The link is http://www.pomona.edu/adwr/admissions/Applying/Information.shtml

If everything else is in place, I don’t think they’ll deny your admission on a technicality like that. I assume your a rising senior. If a Spanish 4 class is available, I highly reccomend you take it, if you really want a shot at Pomona, regardlessly of whether you want to or not. As one of the most selective liberal arts schools in the country, Pomona, like any elite school, looks for its applications to challenge themselves as much as [is humanly] possible. It would be one extra thing to bolster your application.

If it’s not offered, don’t worry about that part. Regardlessly, I’d still e-mail someone in admissions. Additionally, sending an e-mail and asking questions like that to some degree shows interest that they might take note of.

Thank you, wazou7303.

I only took two years of foreign language in high school. I applied early decision and my tentative schedule for second semester of senior year included another Spanish class. But, I decided I didn’t want to take any more so I called the admissions office in January (after I had been accepted) to ask if it would be okay to not take the 3rd year of Spanish and to take some AP physics instead. The admissions person whom I talked to didn’t seem to care at all. He basically said, “yeah, sure, do whatever you want. it doesn’t matter.” So, basically, I think if you have everything else taken care of, you’re okay… Hope this helps.
