What type of foundation make-up do you use and like? I need to up my game from drugstore brands. I am currently using a liquid which my aesthetician is advising against. Her recommendation was Jane Iredale Mineral makeup, but the derm’s office where she is doesn’t sell makeup. Does anyone use this and like it? She recommended the compact over the loose powder. If you use this brand, have you had luck ordering from Amazon? I am seeing mixed results. I have found local places that sell it, and I can go check it out in person if need be. I’m just kind of lazy.
I am fair but have a lot of freckling/spots that I prefer to conceal as best as possible. However, I also live in Florida, and melting definitely occurs with the humidity. I also have LARGE pores, and of course some wrinkles, though not too bad. Mostly crows’ feet and fine lines around my mouth. Any info on the brand suggested by the aesthetician or any other ideas are welcome.
I used to use MAC matte powder make up and loved, loved, loved it until I got older (40s) and it made every wrinkle pop. It really is best for perfectly smooth young skin, IMO.
I had a short term relationship with Mineral Hygienics which worked better than the MAC with my aging skin. I had a hard time finding the right shade – ended up buying a LOT of product – and I thought coverage was so-so. Bare Minerals caused me to break out.
Now in my 50s, I am now hooked to IT Cosmetics CC+ cream (thanks to the Parent Cafe!).
I use the Bye Bye Redness Neutralizing Color Correcting Cream to cover up any redness or scars & sometimes in the summer that is all I wear. It comes in different shades now – a huge improvement over only offering a single shade.
I also use the Secret Sauce Moisturizer first on the driest parts of my face and definitely on the spots where I will brush on a little of the redness corrector (definitely use a small fine brush to apply as little as possible). I’ve found a tiny bit of the moisturizer goes a long way and helps the corrector blend nicely.
IT CC+ Cream is my foundation. I started off buying trial sizes to see if I liked it or not. In the winter, I am Light. As I get tan from the sun, I blend Light & Medium, then Medium only, and then blend Medium and Tan. This is the only brand I’ve been able to decently match the color of my skin throughout the seasons.
I use one of the IT brushes to apply it as lightly as possible. And, I use the outrageously priced Brush Love to clean my brush daily (I’ve tried other brands and brush shampoos and keep going back to IT’s Brush Love, ugh).
The CC+ Cream is now offered in original (little bit of a moisturizer shine) and matte. I like both.
I like Jane Iredale products - eye shadow and powder blush are great. Very natural colors that stay true on the skin. However, I hate powder foundation - hard to apply evenly and I think it sits on top of the skin. In my humble opinion, Giorgio Armani is the best foundation hands down and I’ve tried everything. I use their luminous silk, but there are a few others with varying degrees of sheerness. Blends and melts into the skin and is not even visible.
I use Prescriptives foundation, which is only available by mail order now. I have tried others, but I always come back to the Flawless Skin foundation. I use their pressed powder, as well, but I apply it with a large brush.
I used to use loose powder, but I find it tends to crease now that I am a bit older.
Thanks for starting this discussion. I’ve used Clinque forever but in the last few years, I hate the way it looks on my skin. I haven’t found a suitable alternative yet so I’m following this thread for recommendations.
The closest I’ve come is using Laura Mercier’s foundation primer first but I hate having to use so many layers. Most of the time I just use moisturizer and that’s it. The loose make up settles too much in my wrinkles.
I’d love to find a good tinted moisturizer. Laura Mercier has one but I haven’t bitten the bullet and tried yet (I’m cheap when it comes to makeup).
For day to day use, I like Marcelle BB cream. When I need a little more, I use Laura Mercier Smooth Finish Flawless Fluide. Sometimes I will use Juice Beauty. Even in the summer I don’t have a problem with “meltage.” Why is she recommending no liquid?
New England climate here. I’ve had great luck with SkinCeuticals Physical Fusion UV Defense SPF 50. I’m lazy and just use it on top of a primer. Sometimes add a powder foundation, sometimes don’t.
Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer is well worth it, for me, but I think it’s difficult to know whether what works for one person will work for another. FWIW I have super fair skin and rosacea.
I like the BareMinerals loose mineral foundation and if you go to one of the stores they are good about showing you the best way to put it on and get the color right. I also like this serum pump foundation by No. 7, which is a drugstore brand (which I normally never buy drugstore brands) but was given to me and seems to work well. It’s fairly light coverage. I recently got this really light stuff made by Glossier, but Ineed to use some concealer in spots if I use it.
Thanks for the follow up @Hoggirl. I’m a bit of a makeup junkie
I have the IT cosmetics celebration foundation which is a powder foundation that comes in a compact. I’ve used in the past the bare minerals foundation which is loose. I have never tried Jane Iredale so I don’t have any knowledge.
This is the thing I’ve found about powder foundations. As my skin has become drier and older, the powder is very cakey and settles in my lines. It’s ok if I spray setting spray on top but it’s not one of my favorites.
What I usually wear. I use a primer, it keeps my foundation from oxidation and turning orange so I have a too faced primer that I put on. Then I use the it cosmetics CC cream. I like the matte finish best but most people like the regular. I use a sponge and put a dap on the back of my hand to warm up the foundation.
I then dap the wet sponge into the foundation and dap it on my face. So I have a very thin layer of foundation which I really blend I with the sponge.
I will then put a powder on top. But use the sponge again to sort of set the powder so it looks more natural.
@deb922 - thanks! That is all very helpful and specific! Does the primer not clog your pores? Can all of these products be purchased at Ulta? I do not have a Sephora near me.
For those who use the Laura Mercier products - where do you purchase those?
@Midwest67 - I am quite certain I need to clean my brushes more often! Where do you buy your brush cleaning product?
Part of my challenge is that it’s a haul for me to go somewhere where there is a wide range of makeup choices. I do feel like the mineral makeup she suggested may settle into my lines too much. Maybe she is hoping for that so I will go more frequently for facials - ha!
My all-time favorite is Estee Lauder Double Wear liquid foundation. It is all I have worn for 25-30 years. They have come out with a Lite version recently, but I need the coverage in the original. Any cosmetic counter will find your best color and give you a free sample to try. They also sell it at Ulta. It lasts all day. I remove it with a makeup wipe and then wash my face with soap and water.
I use plain liquid soap to clean my brushes and sponge. I do have a brush cleaning mat which I bought cheap at TJ Maxx but I usually just clean them with my hands.
Absolutely, brushes should be cleaned. I probably clean mine every couple of weeks, only takes a minute.
And no, the primer does not clog my pores. I’ve only started using a primer after my son got married 2 years ago and needed makeup that lasted all day. I use it every time I put makeup on. Easy as putting on moisturizer
I have no recommendation for foundation, but I have had some issues ordering makeup from Amazon. I don’t recommend it. But, my experience could be unusual, I admit.
To be transparent, Macy’s had this as a deal of the day and I got it for 1/2 price. I have found too faced primers at Nordstrom Rack and TJ Maxx also for much less than $34
@deb922 , I use the same eye primer. I used to use Urban Decay, but prefer the Too Faced.
Lately I have been using a foundation sample of Clinique Even Better Refresh Hydrating and Repairing Makeup I got from Ulta. I really like it so far and plan to purchase it.
