Founding a Volunteering Program

My friend and I were planning on developing some kind of volunteering thing. We both want to do something related to medical issues, or art. Anyone have any advice on what we should do? And we want it to be a year-long thing, not just a summer thing, or something you do in one day.

Well first you have to know what you actually want to do …

He just stated what he wants to do.

I would say work with both!
Set up an art for kids program at a childrens hospital. Let them draw, create art whatever. or you and some of your pals could create art, sell it for cash and give the money to the hospital.

Think about what you want to accomplish, and what your goal is. You could even google what you asked and see if other people have done it.

That’s a REALLY good idea! We probably would have chosen that if I had seen this post earlier. However, we’ve decided to teach elementary school children about marine biology, and then expand that to just biology throughout next year. (But this decision is still not solid)

I actually like your idea better, but do you think sick children would have the energy to learn how to draw?

Of course!!!
Drawing is a way to release frustration, sadness whatever and it makes kids happy.

Don’t go all like art teacher strict rules on them. Just show them an activity and let them have fun. My dad is an artists and he did stuff like that with my class when I was in elementary school. It’s fun and kids love it, and then they feel soooo cool that they could make something. It works best on younger kids though.

In your opinion, do you think it would be better to teach science in an elementary school or teach sick children art?

Which would be more realistic, and more of a benefit to society?

Sorry I’m bombarding you with questions, but we’re confused on what to do and would like an opinion other than our own. Thanks!

Which one would you get more people to attend?
If I was a kid the 1st one would be the last thing I ever thin of (but that might be because i’m an artsy person).

Helping out sick kids could be a great hook. It seems more fufilling to do that. It is what I would do.

Which one do you love more? Which one would you have the time and heart to do? Which one would help you accomplish what you want to accomplish by helping out kids?

I would love to help sick children more. However, my friend is concerned that they would be too sick to do so, and that it seems kind of “sketchy”. She is also worried that the illness may be too serious. Do you think the sicknesses are that serious?

Personally, I would have the time to help sick children, since I could do it over the weekend, instead of visit elementary schools after school.

Both of us want to do something medical-related in the future, but my partner still disagrees on the idea.

Well, you could go to like a place were the illness odes not spread like crazy. That would solve the first issue.

2nd, hospital’s do fun stuff for kids all the time. When my sis was stuck in the hospital for a few months, they played games, watched movies, played in the play room, did some trick-or-treating in costumes! The kids love it, it helps them forget that they are so sick, it gives them a way of escape. When my sis was doing those things, she was at her happiest, so were the other kids.
Kids are sick for different reasons. The hospital will never let them take part in the activity if they are so ill thta they can not do it, or if they will get others sick, remember that as well.

lolz I like this idea as well. I might just do it to. ^__^

Thank you! Hopefully, my partner agrees in doing this  I just e-mailed the hospital asking if such a program was possible. I’m really loving this idea, especially because I really want to be involved in medicine when I’m older. This sounds soooooo fun.

thanks so much again! hahaha

No problem.
I love to help.

Oh and by the way, what do you think about the science program? Do you think the kids would like it?

Well as I said before I’m an artsy type of person. The word science would have made me pass out.

But there may be some kids who will love it. But you said marine bio would be what you will teach. How many kids know what that is? Would you give an explenation to all students on what it is? At that age the majority of kids do not know what they want to do with their life. They would rather have fun and whatnot, perhaps that would be fun for them, who knows.

You could always make up a questionere sheet thing asking kids which one they like better, just to get an idea.

Yeah, you have a good point there. I think we’re leaning more into the hospital thing, but we’ll ask around.

thanks again! :D

No problem!
