If their intention is to recruit a different social creature in the future…then cutting now is the only way. If they are in trouble due to the syle of pledge now…then change means cutting that type of creature. Unkind…unsavory and cruel but from their long term growth potential…necessary. If their magic target is X and they have below X then there is a problem in the big picture. Your 40% is a means to the end goal.

hazmat, That is possible. I just wonder why these kids got bids in the first place.

Failing chapters in general have a spate of poor or weak leadership. They don’t handle or engage the rush/pledge process effectively and quickly the status and success of a chapter is in danger. Certainly you must have questioned the leadership of any group that would invite and then cut 40% of their pledge class. Chapter weakness happens over time and then it is way hard to restore. The problem is that your son didn’t see this big picture. He is young, he wants to belong, he wants the Greek experience. Not knowing much about the percentage of Greeks on his campus some of this is hard to help with. I can tell you this is an act of desperation. I maintain the chapter is in trouble. I’d say it could have been girl behavior while drinking or other issue but not to explain 40% cuts of a pledge class. Likely your son was blindsighted due to lack of reasearch and the want to belong. You can always contact the univeristy…and inquire about the chapter.
