Fraternity/Sorority Rush + Rankings

^I believe it is pretty standard to have a year long social probation for any fraternity coming back on campus and there’s no way SAE would agree to that. It’s tough for them right now because panhel is boning SAE/ZBT/Sig so hard. With all the sorority so pro that’s been handed out recently it’s possible that a lot of them actually will start to stay away from those houses, we’ll see I guess.

If I were to make a tier system it would go something like this (based on how hard the frats throw down and the guys)

tier 1

phi psi
pike
theta chi
sae
zbt
aepi

tier 2

fiji
sammy
psi u
sig
sig ep

tier 3

phi delt
chi psi
sigma chi
adphi

and for sororities it’d be this

tier 1

alpha phi
tri delt
kappa

tier 2

theta
axo
skrappa
chi-o

tier 3

dg
sdt
dphie

tier 4

adphi
pi phi
zeta

Here’s my perspective as a GDI living with 6 guys who are all in greek life, 4 of them in ‘top’ houses and 2 in tier 37 houses.

SAE is full of fags to be honest. The guys are ******s, they are completely full of themselves, but damn they get girls. And hot ones. It really baffles me. My roommate is not attractive (according to many of the girls I know) but I swear he’s been to date parties with so many hot tri-delt, phis, kappas and axo girls. It’s ■■■■■■■■. It’s all because of the name.

Phi Psi - how these guys get girls is beyond me, but they do. Every single person I’ve had the misfortune of encountering sucks. They are cocky, egoistic, ******s who act like they are god’s gift to man, and play beer pong like it’s a religion. they have (or well, had) sick pregames but their house next year SUCKS hahahahha. Again, they get girls (hot ones) but I dont know how.

Theta Chi - these guys smoke so much weed, some are socially awkward, some are cocky and arrogant, but a few are actually pretty normal. Don’t know much about them because i don’t have a roommate in this fraternity, but from what I gather, a lot of people wonder why they get girls.

Pike - I’ve encountered awesome guys in pike, and i’ve encountered the biggest ****** i’ve ever met at UofM in this fraternity. For the most part though, the 3 or 4 guys that I know well are awesome. But then again, they don’t really associate with their fraternity as much so I dunno.

Fiji - they are nice guys. that’s all i really have to say about them

AEPi - nice kids, i swear half of the business school is aepi kids, they act like they’re really popular in my classes which is kind of off-putting, but i don’t mind em.

ZBT - sorry, but ZBT is not a tier 1 house if fiji isn’t. that’s ****ing stupid.

all in all, I hate greek life, but my roommates love it. It’s not for everyone, but it’s a great way to party, meet people, hook up with people, and go to sick football pregames.

For sororities, how hard is it for sophomores to rush?? How competitive is it?

I am a member of Michigan Greek Life and I just wanted to dispel some of the rumors on here about different fraternities and sororities being on social probation (or “so pro”). First of all, if you don’t know what so pro is, it is when a fraternity or sorority is prevented from having any/all social activities.
So pro comes in two different forms. The first is enacted by the specific chapter’s national organization, and this prevents the chapter from having date parties, formals, and any organized events. However, many chapters who are only on so pro by their nationals continue to have mixers and pre games with other chapters on campus, because these are relatively under the radar, and no one from their national organization is policing them on campus.
The second kind of social probation is that enacted by the University. This can happen for any of a million reasons, and lately they are being ridiculous. Rumor has it that our current president, Mary Sue Coleman, really dislikes Greek Life, and is thus being unreasonably strict. Social probation from the University is a much bigger problem. For fraternities, it means they cannot host any party of any kind (even though most still do anyway). For sororities, it means that they cannot have more than 25 members at the same fraternity event, even if it is an open party. A student-run task force called SRC checks up on this regularly, and reports violations to the office of greek life.
Off-campus houses are something different entirely. These are houses that have violated the rules so many times that the university has removed their charter and they now operate independently. This is not allowed, but since these chapters own their houses, there isn’t much the university can do to make them leave. So instead, they’ve started threatening everyone who goes there to party. The new rule is that if any more than 25 girls from the same house are found at one of these houses, their sorority will be put on social probation. This was a huge problem on St. Patty’s day this year, which resulted in a lot of sororities being put on so pro.

Here is the breakdown of who is currently on social probation/off-campus:
Fraternities:
Social probation: Theta Chi, Sammy, Psi U (really screwed), Chi Phi, AEPi (NOTE: these houses are all on so pro for varying amounts of time. Some may already be done, while others will have it through next school year).
Off-campus: SAE, ZBT, Sig

Sororities:
Social probation: Alpha Phi, Kappa, SDT, Chi-O, possibly AXO
Off-campus: none.

Really? Student Run task force? SRC? sounds like a bunch of miserable little ******s.

^and this whole social probation thing is why I’m afraid of trying to join a frat, I don’t want to end up hating my school for being buzzkills.

Scott- you’re not looking at it correctly from a guy’s standpoint. It’s like impossible to get into parties, especially good ones, if you’re a GDI guy. Girls can essentially go wherever they want. Being a GDI guy is like a never ending social probation. Besides Psi U any fraternity you join will probably not be on so pro for an extended period of time. Everyone else should be off by welcome week next year and the only way houses get so pro is by not totally following the rules when SRC comes by, which are very easy to get around. It’s a bigger deal for sororities that go to SAE and ZBT who are currently really being cracked down on, but trust me, for guys so pro is no reason not to join a fraternity.

What are the usual causes for being put on probation?

Houses generally get put on sopro because they don’t control the distribution of alcohol at a party. Technically speaking, a registered fraternity party is supposed to be byob. They never are, but the only way you can get in trouble for that is by having a keg or handles. When SRC comes by they have to see only pints of alcohol and beer cans. To keep cost down pretty much every house buys handles and just fills the pint bottles with them, so like the only way people get on so pro is if an SRC guy sees the handles. Some other miscellaneous infractions would be having more than 25 girls over to a non-registered party, not enough sober monitors, or drunk sober monitors. It’s really pretty easy to stay off sopro.

Psi U is on SoPro for having a sober monitor be drunk and punch an IFC Executive Board member, also they put xanax in their drinks…pretty sketchy, and that is why they will be on Social Probation for 50 weeks on school calender. More or less for eternity in Greek Life’s eyes.

I’d like to add one more thing, SIG EP IS NOT TIER TWO. They have no pledging and are a ****ing joke among the rest of Greek Life. If you like cargo shorts and social clubs, join Sig Ep.

just some notes: sammy and aepi are on so pro till the end of this school year and will not be on it during welcome week or next year. Try to rush during fall rather than waiting, the winter rush process is a lot harder and brothers don’t care as much for winter pledges.

UMAD?

That being said, Sig Ep is not a joke. I would also classify them as tier 2. All the guys I’ve met were chill and they get along with a lot of girls (unlike Psi U where I literally have heard at least 10 different girls trash talk them simply out of the blue).

If anything, Psi U should move down on the rankings.

^^ hahahahahahahahahahahah no. just no.

Also, everyone talks about social probation like it’s the plague. Fraternities don’t follow it, all it means is they have to be a little more careful with their parties.

i would also like to know

Please don’t read if you’re a girl.
Im probably going to sound like an *******, but here it goes.

So for the most part the rankings are right, HOWEVER, the bottom ones are kinda different. Pi Phi, Zeta, DG, and ADPi all suck and should all be grouped together as bottom. Upper mid I would say SDT Chi O. Guys actually go after some of these girls where as Pi Phi, Zeta, DG, and ADPi kinda just throw themselves at guys at mixers with higher tier frats.

With frats everything is pretty accurate…AEPi is one of those cases where they tell themselves enough that theyre tier 1 and eventually believe it. Good frat though. Not really tier 1.

Also this girl said a lot of the guys in different frats are *******s…I’m sorry but thats usually an indication that the frat pulls girls. Guys, don’t listen to one girl about frats. Seriously. I rushed some weird places just because I talked to a girl who happened to love those fraternities.

Lastly, SIG EP SUCKS. I am not joking when I say every upper tier fraternity rips on them. They are not tier 2. Sorry Kobudnik.

(the *******s is a s s h o l e s if you couldnt figure it out)

I would also like to know about sorority rush as a sophomore.
I’ve heard Alpha Phi, Kappa, Tri-Delt, and Theta will not take any sophomores. Is this true and are there any others that do not take sophomores?
