Freak Appliance Accident

Lucky me.

Was pulling a small glass bowl out of a lower cupboard today and bumped it on the side of the glass oven door. I saw some glass pieces fall - oh no my bowl broke! Look at the bowl, it’s fine. OH NO, my door is cracked on the side! And over the next hour I endured listening to the entire door slowly crackle and shatter into a million intact pieces (tempured glass). UGH. One SLIGHT bump, one oven down the tubes.

It’s 8 years old and the repair costs would be over half the cost of a new appliance. If only I could take back those few seconds! If only my daughter didn’t want waffles for breakfast and I didn’t need that bowl!!! IF ONLY…!!!

Anything like this ever happen to you? I’m SO, SO bummed to have to buy a new appliance to replace one that was working perfectly fine!

That is frustrating ! My stove is just a little older than that and I love it, but there are vents on the top of the door that have allowed dust bunnies to get in between the layers of glass. It drives me crazy and I have thought about having a repairman to take it apart just so I can clean it. I fear I will have a heard time getting a new oven because it vents under the house. I hope you get some satisfaction on either the repair or replacement

@abasket, that stinks - sorry about that! I’ve actually had a door replaced (was to the attached microwave part but you may not have to replace the entire oven. The door isn’t cheap but still cheaper than a new oven.

Your story reminds me of something funny my husband did when we were recently married. We moved about a year after we were married and as I unpacked I saw that my husband had like triple wrapped every ikea drinking glass individually, and perfectly, in paper, cloth, bubble wrap etc. But for some reason he had put this expensive tiffany bowl we had received for our wedding into the thin cloth bag it came in and that was it. So the $1.50 glasses all survived and the $275 bowl had to be thrown out. He had no idea why he did that and is still kicking himself about it!

I hate this for you. Here’s to tomorrow being a better day!

Strange the oven door glass is so fragile. I’d inquire about cost to replace the door before deciding next steps. Wonder if the folks who replace windshields on site could replace your oven window? I have no personal experience but would be curious.

I would doubt it; the glass on the oven door is double paned and undoubtedly has some sort of gas in between the layers so the glass doesn’t get too hot.

Might your homeowner’s insurance cover this??

Man, I had a REALLY bad experience with tempered glass. You should really avoid it. It’s a safety hazard.

One day, I’m sitting in my living room with my mom and I hear an explosion in the bathroom. We were the only ones in the house. The glass sink literally exploded with no prompting. No sarcasm, it exploded. It had no cracks, no damage, no one touched it, nothing. The glass went everywhere and if someone was in the bathroom, the probably would’ve died. Not exaggerating. We only had it for maybe 3-4 years.

Here’s a video that explains the dangers of tempered glass.

Would this work for you?

Yep…the only thing we keep in the cabinet above our glass top stove is…plastic water bottles. That’s it.

We called our appliance repair guy pronto. It’s a Samsung so, hard to get parts for it anyway! But, the parts and installation were estimated at $500 - $500 repair on a $1000 8 year old stove? Husband says no!

That video is interesting. Thanks for sharing. I’ll show it to my H but I have a feeling he will not want to mess with it - the entire door (not just the little glass window) is shattered but intact - no telling what will happen when it really gets handled… we have it covered and blocked off right now. Stove top is fine!!!

Honestly it sounds like something that would happen to me. Careful of the glass for awhile! My husband was like a bull in a China shop when we first got granite counters. He broke several Pyrex bowls slamming them down too hard. We thought we cleaned it all up, but I ended up stepping on a piece far from the scene and it was quite painful getting the glass out of my foot.

I feel your pain, abasket. Wish I had an answer to turn back time. Instead, I can only commiserate.

Recently came downstairs to find my glass cook top cracked. It started about a half inch long and now is an entire corner. It’s a year and half old; must replace the cooktop. I had a bottle slip the night before, but don’t know for sure that it the stove.

Cheers to us! Best part of aging is that if everyone is okay, I try to ignore “thing” stuff that goes wrong. Right now, I have a 14 month old dryer that requires an entire new electrical panel, too. It just went crazy… Buy the extended warrantee on your next stove.

We did have the extended warranty! H buys them on EVERYTHING! It was good for 5 years. This has been 8.

Not worth it to get it repaired, Have fun stove shopping!

My mom got a new stove with a glass cooktop and right after she bought it she was taking down a silver ice bucket from the cabinet above the micro and it slipped out of her hand shattering the whole cooktop. Even though it wasn’t covered under the warranty the store allowed it and replaced it for free.

Wow CaliCash ! I had no idea that sinks would just explode…they are pretty but wouldn’t work in my home.

@abasket

Well…if it’s any consolation…according to an NPR broadcast, the life of appliances is about 7 years…so your stove was on the other side of the bell curve!

We had a clock go on a 18 year old stove. My husband wanted it replaced…clock was $300…new stove was $650. We got the new stove. And we will enjoy it for…seven years.

Husband hates our fridge…I told him he only has three more years to hate it…it’s four years old.

I feel your pain. My 2013 car has had 4 windshield replacements and 2 windshield repairs, and counting. :frowning:

No, I don’t tailgate dumptrucks coming from the quarry (this is what my husband asks every time I tell him the glass has cracked again).

@lje62 Yep, very scary. And manufacturers don’t even inform you of the risks because why would they? They are very pretty but it’s safe to say that I will not be investing in one in the future.

Imagine if someone was bathing a baby or a small animal? Just horrible.

Yes - those “take back those few seconds” moments! I feel your pain.

My moment occurred when we gently (and it was gently) pushed a small kayak into a Rav4. After measuring, we had all agreed, DH, me and the salespeople, that it would be much easier to put the kayak inside the vehicle than on the roof. Right - until the front of the kayak bumped into and shattered the front windshield. LL Bean has me as a customer for life - they reimbursed us since it was their sales reps suggestion!

That sink story is scary. Thank you for that warning!
