Freak Appliance Accident

^^ yep, some friends borrowed our kayak and pushed it through the windshield of their Honda Odyssey

Thanks for posting that ^. I feel less stupid. LL Bean was great, but I did have to deal with corporate who politely told me, “We do generally suggest that people put the kayaks on top, not in the smaller vehicles”…!!

No advice abasket–just feel your pain!

Thanks all. I did convince my H to at least call our insurance tomorrow. We do have a $500/deductible but who knows maybe they would deem the appliance too old to fix and say they would cover the difference to buy - probably not, but worth a try!

DH let go off a windshield wiper and shattered the windshield and to make matters worse, the new blade he was going to put on was the wrong size.

“Anything like this ever happen to you? I’m SO, SO bummed to have to buy a new appliance to replace one that was working perfectly fine!”

Yup. If you followed my oven saga from last year… See the tortie in my avatar? She is the one who knocked the control panel out of Mr.'s hands while he was ready to put it back in after replacing the dried out capacitor! Turns out, Thermador does not make replacement control panels for 15-yr old ovens, and the only one we were able to find was 3 inches too long… Oh, and I ended with a scar on the knee, too!

It really, really stinks. I feel your pain.

@abasket, I’d think hard before calling your insurance company over something this “small” in the grand scheme of things. It doesn’t take much for them to raise your rates, for years, or to cancel policy.
I’ve paid $4500 out of pocket for car fixes this year, because I didn’t want insurance issues. We learned from a mistake a couple of years ago.
I haven’t experienced homeowners insurance issues, but I’ve heard friends say they filed a couple of minor claims that turned bad.

When things started breaking here we bought a home warranty, you may want to look into it for your other appliances.

Tempered glass is not supposed to explode with glass projectiles flying all over. At all. It should break into crumbs with edges that are not sharp enough to kill or damage.

“DH let go off a windshield wiper and shattered the windshield and to make matters worse, the new blade he was going to put on was the wrong size.”

Years ago I had a Nissan hatchback which had a wiper on the rear window. One Xmas Eve day I took it to get washed and the machine which goes up the hood, over front window, over the top of car and down the back window - got caught on the rear wiper and went straight through the window. It shattered in a million pieces. Then I had to drive about 15 miles to a get the car window replaced in the freezing cold. I always wondered what people driving behind me were thinking. Car wash paid for everything (their deductible was so large they cut me a check iirc $1500) on the spot after calling repair place. After that they started putting a plastic bag over rear wipers.

I had the car for several years after that and was always finding wee bits of the glass around.

Yes, BB that is exactly how it broke - the edges first - more chipped - and the rest of it bubbled up in a weird way - broken and shattered but still intact.

The glass on our door shattered (yet stayed together) a few years ago. After being shocked by the price of a new oven, I found a website where I ordered the replacement glass. It was a $150 risk, but well worth it. If you go this route just make sure you don’t over tighten the screws when putting in the new glass.

I pm’d you before I read this thread.
Look at PartsSelect and see if they have a window or even an entire oven door.
We have fixed a dryer, washer, and oven through their parts and their wonderful tutorials.
They are amazing and we now think of fixing before rebuying

Will do. In our case the glass is not just the window, but extends to the sides, above and below the “window” class.

@abasket, please don’t call the insurance company for a $500 loss. When you make an inquiry or a claim insurance companies report to an industry database called C.L.U.E. The info is used for underwriting and determining rates. I don’t have time to write more about it but you can Google to find more info.

^Just calling the insurance company goes to the data base?

The explosion of tempered glass looks scary. We have shower doors that can explode!

@igloo, yes, unfortunately, even inquiries about claims can go into the database. It’s a gray area that depends on how your insurer interprets your inquiry.

Before everyone gets too excited about the dangers of tempered glass, please take a looks at

Tempered glass, by design, breaks into small pieces that are jagged/irregularly shaped. Much better than having a large sharp piece.

This is an interesting video on how glass can be both incredibly strong, and still shatter -

Igloo, what DecideSomeHow said - I posted this a page or so ago, too. Unless your door is defective (or not tempered glass), you have nothing to worry about. Tempered glass does not explode, it crumbles and falls down in small pieces - it is a safety feature.

Glass is a very interesting substance.

BB is right - for the most part the door is fully intact - shattered but intact!!!
