Freshman can answer questons

I was here last year at this time and just checked in again. Now I’m the one that can help instead of asking a million questions so ask away.

I’m a female CAS Honors student. I had lots of second thoughts about choosing BU all last summer and into Oct. and now I love BU and can’t see myself at any other school.

What do you think about the honors program (classes, students, etc.)? Also, did you choose to live in honors housing or regular?

thanks sincere, im currently having lots of second thoughts about BU, im mainly worried about being overwhelmed with the hugeness of everything and the whole “being just a number” deal. I’m considering another school I most likely wouldn’t be just because of it’s small size and the idea that it will be a sort of sanctuary from the rest of boston(even though im in love with the city). did you have similar worries before attending and did they end up being over nothing? (i want them to have been over nothing  really badly)

also, if i go to BU i’ll be in CAS, so will i just be taking mainly required courses freshman year and not really focusing on my major?

what is the best dorm to stay in if i’m in CAS

how are the winters like?

I wasn’t accepted to the Honors Program, but I am in CAS. I’ve heard or read that I can still join in my sophomore year. But I’m wondering, would joining Honors have any effect on me getting into med/dental school? I mean to say, what are the advantages of being in Honors?

I live in West and it is a nice home like atmosphere and good dining. I suggest you pick Warren for social reasons and staying out of the cold on the way to class. The boys are way on the other side so we didn’t meet many until the weather got cold and people stayed in more but there is more privacy to and from the bathroom. The weather is great except for about 3 months but one of those you are home for break so it doesn’t matter. We go to a lot of smaller concerts on and off campus something I couln’t do in the small town where I live.
At first BU is exciting then scary. The colleges within the school are smaller and more of a family. My Honors classes have been excellent and all the TAs know me and the Professors have offered to help me with intern jobs. If I chose NYU or Georgetown I’d just be a regular student but here I work hard and can be at the top of my class. I may decide to do the 5 year Economics Masters Degree but who knows since I’m still undecided. You can switch here a lot easier than some schools.

I hated summer orientation and thought I’d transfer after that but now I love it here and have great friends. My roomie has a boyfriend so she often stays at his room since it is in a brownstone. You meet people everywhere. I joined one club and am trying to learn to snowboard. We study a lot in groups and meet at various locations around campus. The only class I have that might grade on a curve is Writing. A few kids on my floor partied too much and their grades fell and one lost her scholarship but she is going to get it back and is doing much better now that she only goes out Thursday-Saturday. Hope this helps.

Regarding the Honors Program. Its not a big deal just another way to distinguish yourself on a resume. My one Honors class had a small discussion group that was unreal and the other took us on a trip. The Honors dorms are beautiful but I like being in regular housing. I have two friends in Honors but most are in CGS, CFA, SMG, and UNI. My dorm floor has a real variety and a few kids from outside of the U.S. Kids on specialty floors seem to make friends sooner in the year because they may be attending the same classes.

Hey sincere, I was just wondering if you know anything about the science department at BU? It there a lot of support for the research facilities? or is it one of the neglected departments? Thanks!

http://www.bu.edu/admissions/discover/academicfacilities.html

See brand new photonics building cost 80 M and brand new Life Sciences buildings. Boston and BU well known for research and there are many different research facilities and types. Always hearing about BU on the news in this regard. If you really don’t have a strong feeling one way or another – you may want to choose UCLA with in state tuition. Have you visited? Are you accepted at both? Which college at BU?
At bottom of this page you can check out dozens of specific areas.

Yeah I got into both, but I actually got better financial aid at BU. I got into CAS. I’m actually leaving in two hours for the airport to fly over there for the Spring Open House. I am going to visit UCLA when I get back since it’s only a drive away. Thanks for the reply.

seriously, i hear so many negative things about bu.
every time i say im going to go bu and planning to get dual degree in advertising and graphic design. people keep bring up the us news ranking and persuade me that bu is just known for paty school… and like how easy it is to get into that school…and stuff. …
im trying to stay really confident with my decision. … i dont know understand why bu;'s reputation is so bad…first, i was so excited bc everything worked out really well i got good amount of money and blabla… i hope its not that bad at all … . …right?

ok, i gave up two ivy leagues to come here. And it is definitely not easy!!
i’m doing PreMed here and I have no idea what happened with the US News&World Report. It’s unfathomable that BU is tied with Baylor University in Waco, Texas.

So don’t get too overconfident! i did, and it is kicking my ass!

chc2006,
I can’t imagine the motivations and what type of people are saying these things. Surely by reading all the posts here and on the BUnite site at LIVEJOURNAL, where you can interact with current BU students, you are not getting this viewpoint. Kids party at any college including quite a bit at BU but BU never hits the party school rankings. I don’t understand what kind of people would undermine your decision since its so important for a young adult to make a choice on what is the best fit for them There are pros and cons to every school and kids that choose just because some magazine makes a living on coming up with arbitrary rankings may regret that choice. Its normal to have doubts but you need to decide what feels right for you and it is usually more about the social life, academics, location, etc. that make your college experience a good one. If you take out CGS the acceptance rate changes and there are still about 15,000 studenst that are rejected, even with CGS ,compared to maybe 1500 at a smaller school. Nowadays kids are applying to 8-10 schools so averages are skewed all around. Big schools have a harder time estimating housing so some are more likely to over admit and you see that for the last few years 0 kids have gotten in off BU’s waitlist so this shows the challenges of trying to come up with numbers that make sense.

The current Frehman profile, attending students not just accepted, has 25% with over 1410 SAT so how can one say it isn’t a challenging school? If you believe these negatives then its fine to hesitate, in fact normal for all prospective students at any college, but ultimately you need to trust your own well informed ideas on where you’ll be happy.

BTW, at our high shool the difference between being ranked 10th or 36th in the class can come down to one course or one A- vs. a B so consider what ranking really are about—a way for a lame magazine to make money and lots of it. With the world we live in and emerging global economy something could be said for the world rankings having more meaning for this and future generations than a US- centric one, but again, neither means much in the real world. So I believe you should make your choce based on informed thoughts of your own.

thank you so much!!!it helped me alot.
im really proud to be part of bu…seriously.
im going to attend bu open house next week. and im really excited for that even though its only for a day.!

BU is an amazing school with a lot of reputation no matter what anybody says.

im way too excited to start BU…haha, but question…how easy (hard) is it to transfer from College of Engineering to College of Arts and Sciecnes (i want to major in Econ.)…i havnt regestered for classes yet…so yea…thanks! again…really looking foward to attending BU! haha go terriers!

djkim253 i was wondering about that too
can i change to different college before starting register for classes?

YES. Switch NOW. The longer you wait, the less likely you can switch colleges. Otherwise you’ll have to do an intrauniversity transfer and it will be a huge hassle.

what do i have to do?
where should i call?
