Freshmen Housing

Which ones are the freshmen dorms and how do they compare with each other? Please include location convenience, dorm life, dorm size, and building facilities in your evaluation. Thank you!

just fyi, at UVA it’s First Years (second, third, fourth years etc.) not freshmen (soph, jrs, srs)
And here’s what I know:
So basically, there’s Alderman (called New Dorms) and McCormick (called Old Dorms). Old Dorms are closer to central grounds, New Dorms are closer to OHill which is the most common dining hall. McCormick is hall-style, and most (if not all?) of Alderman is suite-style.
The housing site [Housing Division, U.Va.](Housing and Residence Life, U.Va.) has info on like size/facilities/floor-plans/etc. I would tell you all this stuff but I live in Hereford, which is going to be upperclassmen next year, so it wouldn’t really apply to you…

Old dorms are significantly closer to central grounds. Kellogg is out of the way but is like a hotel. Maupin and Webb are the dorms for the Echols students and Jeff Scholars (if they so choose), and Hereford and Courtenay are the furthest dorms- they require a 15-20 minute walk or a bus ride to get to central grounds.

Are the Echols dorms in a good location?

Echols dorms are super close to the dining hall and athletics facilities, and they’re the closest of the New Dorms area to classes. You’re probably about a five minute walk further from class than Old Dorms.
