Funny things people have said to you!

My husband actually made me an elaborate Valentine’s card this year, complete with a rotating dial and photo he glued on it.

I painted him a card that was supposed to be a path at Hammonasset that we often walk. He didn’t recognize the location, so that tells you what kind of artist I am!

My DD had very wispy light blonde hair as a baby and toddler. It took forever to grow! At 10 months old it was only about 2" long and stood straight up. People in stores would ask me if I did her hair that way on purpose. Um, noooo…

Abstract and not realist  Love the effort from both of you

Maybe I don’t have a sense of humor but some of these things aren’t funny.

As a person who has put foot in mouth and said things I wish I could take back, remember that sometimes the people saying them regret what came out their mouth.

The original post, that was funny!

When my oldest was a baby/toddler she had really blonde hair and blue eyes. My wife and I both have brown hair and brown eyes. People would ask us if she was ours.

We had neighbors that were Chinese by ancestry. They had 4 kids. The oldest had lovely platinum blonde natural hair and the others were dark like their folks. The mom said they always got the strangest looks and Qs.

Only one daughter from China who, even though I have shrunk considerably, is still shorter than I am. She went to a huge elementary school in Chinatown (1100 students pre-k to 5) but everyone knew everyone there. However, once she hit middle school, she always wanted me to attend parent-teacher vonferences so she didn’t have to explain herself. I recall two of her middle school teachers who, when I introduced myself, just couldn’t figure it out. Brains spinning, this-does-not-compute thoughts.

Later on, she told me that she enjoyed surprising people expecting someone who looked like her name.

When my kids were in elementary school, I dragged them with me to the grocery store. You can tell that my kids are cut from the same cloth and they are almost exactly 2 yr apart in age (like, 2 yr minus 2 weeks).

At the register, the cashier looked at me and then at my kids and said, “Are they twins?” I said no. Then the bagger said, “Are you sure?” And my kids laughed.

And I laughed. And then I said, “Not unless one of them was stuck in the womb for 2 years.”

The cashier and the bagger looked at each other in confusion and then said to me, “What?”

Then I said, “They are not twins. They are 2 yr apart in age.” The bagger still didn’t understand. :joy:

When DS was about a month old, we brought him into a local ice cream shop. He was happily asleep in his stroller when a mother and her older teen daughter came by. The mother commented on how cute the baby was and the daughter agreed, adding “look, he’s so young he hasn’t opened his eyes yet.” The mother just looked at me like, one day you’ll know. And of course, she was right.

I had my first in 1983, when ‘natural childbirth’ was expected.
I had a failure to progress labor and a c-section.
One of my grad school friends, already a mom, wrote a congratuatory card with a note that said ‘you’re just as much a mom as the rest of us’.
We had been in pediatric nursing grad school together

The ‘baby’s eyes must not be open yet’ comments are cracking me up! :joy:

My husband and I gave up flowers and chocolate for Valentines Day long ago but still exchange cards. It’s almost a competition to find appropriate, sweet ones leading to hugs and thanks. This year I waited until the night before to run into a drug store to buy one for him. There were two people taking their time in front of the display so I waited, and when one left, the second was ready to but wished me “Good luck!”

On the way out of the store I passed a display of winter accessories and remembered that my husband lost his favorite beanie and has been wearing a loud logo hat he dislikes, forbidding me to replace the favorite in the expectation that it would show up after all this time. There was a perfect replacement and I picked it up to give him with my card, figuring he wouldn’t reject an unexpected token Valentines Day gift. He loved it!

Another coworker story:

I showed up at work wearing a beautiful sweater hand knitted by my sister. One woman complimented the sweater then said “How come your sister made that and you can’t do anything?”

This was us with two curly girls. I know people just wanted to comment on it and that’s all they could think of. DH’s response would be “yeah, I spent 2 hours on it this morning”. And for me, “well I did chase her around the house with a pick and a spray bottle”. And when younger DD was 6 and in a county fair pageant, “I just dunked her in the pool and then didn’t touch it” which was the truth!

I didn’t say anything to my husband about Valentine’s Day because he’s been so busy, I didn’t want to bother him. But I discovered it really did bother me he hadn’t even said, “Happy Valentine’s Day!” so I told him that at 7:30 pm. He said, “Oh, my goodness!” and jumped in the car to go to the grocery store, ha. He brought back beautiful roses, a card, balloon, and chocolate. He felt so bad he’d forgotten. It was our 40th Valentine’s Day together. He is a keeper - he does nice things for me every day.

Not funny exactly but impactful. I guess staying on the Valentines Day theme. I admit I can be a procrastinator especially when it comes to gifts and cards. One year I had intended to get a Valentines card etc. for my wife but kept putting it off. Valentines Day came and lo and behold we had a major snow storm. Bad enough the stores closed down before I could head out to get the card etc. I tried to plead my case that I had intended to purchase a card, flowers etc. then the storm hit. My wife just looked at me and said "February 14th just kind of snuck up on you huh? Just missed the message for the last month that Valentines Day was coming? I was forgiven but I always make sure to have that Valentines card early nowadays.

What a lovely guy!

Your note reminded me that my husband and I got engaged on Valentines Day 1977!

Yeah, the funniest part was that my husband had gone to the grocery store earlier in the day - how did he miss all the Valentine’s Day stuff?

Probably because Valentine’s stuff has been in the stores since Christmas. He’d notice today when it’s replaced by Easter stuff!
