We are in the same boat. My child also is a Furman scholar and got accepted today…it said financial aid notifications will go out March 1st.
When did you find out that she is a Furman Scholar?
How do you know if you are a Furman scholar? Did it say so on letter? They say Mar 1 for FA but if we are not getting any merit than we will not be going and not sending out FAFSA and CSS.
Furman Scholar is the first scholarship they get. It’s done in junior year and Guidance Counselor recommends student to college. It’s for $20k.
The next one is the Bell Tower worth $25k. Last year, my daughters acceptance letter said she had the Bell and showed amount. Sounds like this year, the acceptance letter isn’t showing the amount.
The next scholarships are instate Hollingsworth/out of state Townes worth $35k, then the big full ride called Duke.
For what it’s worth… Being out of state, we knew nothing about the Jr Year Furman Scholar process (although I did find the Wofford one in time!) When we visited Furman in the Fall, I asked the AO whether my daughter would be out of the running for the other stated scholarships (Bell/Townes/Duke) and she indicated that it would not hurt her chances at all. So the Furman is a nice guarantee, but for those of us needing more than the $20,000 to make Furman a viable option, it doesn’t really seem to impact the ultimate outcome (I am pretty sure the scholarships aren’t stacked). Those families for whom the $20,000 is enough, what a great program!!!
You are correct that the Furman Scholar $20K scholarship isn’t stackable, but if it gets replaced with a Belltower for a higher amount that one is stackable.
well, the Furman Scholar is stackable with the Palmetto Fellows according to the admissions counselor my daughter talked to
I can’t speak to the Palmetto Fellows since we are from out of state, but my D was told up front that if she was awarded a scholarship that exceeded the initial Furman Scholar $20K then it would replace it and was not stackable. So far my D has been awarded a Bell Tower for $25K. We are in the midst of music auditions, which we do know are stackable on top of the Bell Tower amount.
The academic scholarships are not stackable.
Furman Scholar $20k
Bell $25k
Hollingsworth/Townes $35
Duke full ride
As you get awarded the higher one, the previously given one is cancelled.
Instate Palmetto fellows, hope and life is in addition to Furman scholarships. So is STEM.
You can also be given music scholarships as well as your Furman merit ones. The sports department says they will not stack merit and sport, but…if the sports dept really want you, they do play around…I know for sure a sports person got offered a small sports scholarships, and it wasn’t enough for her to go there, so she got given the Townes…and then it still wasn’t quite enough…quick visit in person to FA office and they gave her a little extra. I’m hoping she was smart enough for Townes. Would hate to think someone got pushed aside for her.
I also know a music major who was given a large music scholarship, plus she qualified for financial aid. She wasn’t a merit scholarship at all. She asked the FA office if there was anything they could do, and they did, and she’s a freshman this year.
I think if a certain department really wants you, there are ways around it. A personal visit to the FA office seems to do the trick.
My letter of acceptance said to expect scholarship information by March 1. Has anyone heard yet? I applied EA. Thanks.
Nothing so far. Maybe we will hear today or tomorrow. March 1 is a Sunday.
We have not heard either. We are hoping we will hear something today, since March 1st is on Sunday. Anyone already heard about music scholarship award amounts?
My child just got email that financial aid package available on admission status page.
Mine too… apparently she knows it not enough for out of state.
Just reviewed my package – Bell Tower $23K.
ACT: 33
GPA: 3.91/4.0
25k Bell Scholarship
Very generous and she is honored. But it’s not enough for us.
3.9/4.5
35 ACT
For future readers/applicants… the larger scholarships (Townes,Hollingsworth) are based in part on ones contribution to community. This is something my daughter had, but not in the outstanding ways many applicants did.
Good luck to future Paladins!
25K Bell Tower
33 ACT
4.0/4.5
My D received her package yesterday as well – Bell Tower $23K.
SAT: 1490
GPA: unweighted 4.0/4.0, weighted 4.58
ranked #1 in class
11 AP classes, leadership, ton’s of ECs
Not enough merit aid for her to commit to Furman. She will be going to a school that costs much less.
My daughter’s Bell Tower letter did not state that her award was renewable for 4 years. Does your email state that the Bell Tower is renewable and give a grade point average to maintain, or does it just show how much you will receive in the first year 2020-21?
@KBinfo My daughter’s letter only lists information for the 2020-21 school year. I just looked at the scholarship section of the Furman website and unlike the Duke, Hollingsworth, and Townes Scholarships the Bell Tower Scholarships section does not say if they are renewable.
