Thanks for checking! On the Furman parent Facebook page many responded that the Bell Tower was renewable in years past and that there was a grade point average to maintain. Perhaps it was an oversight on the letter.
Belltower $25K
32 ACT
3.85 UW/4.6 W
From the Understanding Your Financial Aid Package page on Furman’s website, under Furman Scholarship Renewal Policy. Furman Scholar Scholarships would be the same as Bell Tower Scholarships.
We offer more than 100 renewable scholarships to freshmen who demonstrate a strong ability to succeed based on their academic achievements, commitment to the community, passion for leading, or exemplary talents. Renewal of Lay, Duke, and Furman Scholar Scholarships require a 3.00 cumulative GPA at the end of each academic year. Hollingsworth and Townes Scholarships require a 2.70 cumulative GPA at the end of each academic year, and most special recognition scholarships are renewed as long as the student is making satisfactory academic progress. Grades are checked at the end of each academic year.
@2020vision2025 May I ask which state you are from?
Anyone who got Duke or Townsend/Hollingsworth invites, do you mind sharing your stats? I was on campus last weekend and I noticed they must have been having those interviews based on the signs I saw.
@1stTimeThruMom - We are from MD.
@onemoremom12 we got the Bell Tower as well, generous but not enough compared to lower tuitions/merit at Clemson, VT etc. Surprised my DS did not get more as he volunteers well over 20 hours a week unpaid as an EMT in the town as he is nationally certified. If that does not warrant excellent community service I am not sure what would! In addition to honors workload, Captain of sports teams etc.
@Momtofourkids I have been humbled by the quality of these applicants! So many strong kids, academically and otherwise!
@historylover1 I didn’t think they did interviews for the Townes/Hollingsworth this year. (Just the Duke) What signs did you see?
I only saw signs that said “welcome duke invites” or something of that verbiage
Hi! I’m an incoming freshmen to Furman. Just submitted my deposit. I got the 25k Belltower scholarship: some stats in case it helps to know!
4.0 UGPA / 4.59 WGPA
33 on ACT
10/450 rank
Hello all, I don’t know if this will help anymore, however I just stumbled upon this forum, so I’ll post and hope it is useful. I got the Duke scholarship after the interviews, and know some people are interested in stats. I think that exact numbers sort of miss the point, so I’ll try and do this in a productive but not stressful manner.
GPA: very strong, reported on a 100 point scale
SAT: Once again very high, but certainly not perfect.
Class rank: my school does not report rank, though I was top 10 out of over 250
It should also be noted however that I had two impressive rec letters (maybe only one, I can’t remember if I ended up submitting both), plus multiple leadership positions in activities I’ve been committed to. Also, all of this was coming from a top 20, maybe top 10 high school in the state of Texas, plus a strong essay which showed I had done my research and also communicated my personality.
I hope this helps some people, and please ask questions if you have any.
Ahhhh Yes, answering the person that said sports scholarships and how they handle if they can’t offer enough…you are right and this person ended up with a Duke Scholarship and the others know it…I hope they can keep up. My daughter is a Duke and it is such an honor for those that earned it through Merit. 35 ACT 4.3 GPA lots of ECs but not sports. It’s a very competitive group for sure, but showing intent is a big part as well.
