Game of Thrones- who will live, who will die, who will rule?

Who died tonight? Here is what I remember:

  • Jorah Mormont
  • Lyanna Mormont
  • Eddie (Night’s watch)
  • Brienne
  • Theon
  • Red woman
  • Beric (flaming sword guy)

Unknown:

  • Sam
  • Podrick
  • Tormund

Sam lived and I believe Tormund did too.

My least favorite episode. I know it was necessary but it feels like 95% of the episode could be summed up as ‘‘GRAWRAWGRR…(THUNK!!)…ARGRAAWRG…(THWACK!!)…GAWRAWR!”

I don’t think Sam, Podric, or Tormund are dead. Brienne’s not dead either.

are you sure about Brienne?
my heart was racing through that episode. I kept thinking WHY am I WATCHING? but the end was awesome.

I liked the last 15 minutes best because I spent most of the show trying to see what was happening. Between it being so dark and the very intense editing, my eyes almost gave up.

But VERY exciting!

I’m pretty sure about Brienne. After the wights all crumbled, Jaime, Brienne, and I think Podrick were standing against a wall (where they had just been pinned by wights).

I think Brienne lived too.

I thought the music for the whole ending sequence was amazing. Just a piano for a while, very quiet, and then more dramatic in the godswood.

Some questions I have:

Did Rhaegal live or not? I think so, but he must be injured.

Why did they use Ghost as a prop? He could have rejoined Ser Jorah at least near the end. My D saw him in the preview so she thinks he survived.

Why did Mellisandre have to not survive that night, take off her necklace and all? What was she doing with the Hound while Arya was off doing her “Not Today” duty?

Will Sansa and Tyrion get back together? I love that idea.

It seemed like a lot of the wights had hoods on and I figure it was maybe cheaper to film that way since they wouldn’t need cgi skull/zombie faces.

Night King: No man can kill me.

Arya: I am no man.

Holy crap, still processing and watching the last few minutes. Okay, yes, go Arya!!! Sad about Lyanna… thought she’d make it, or one of her or Jorah.

But… yes, too much zombies and swordfighting. Not my type of show. But… phew, glad to get through that.

Wow, what an episode! Exhausting just to watch.

@Marilyn I love that!!

@greenwitch The two dragons survived. You can see them both flying in the preview above Sansa.

I agree that Brienne lived to fight another day.

Also: Note regarding Mel’s prophecy:

Freys had brown eyes.
Night King had blue eyes.
Cersei has green eyes.

I actually loved this episode. All the loyalties and sacrifices made sense.

Arya for the win.

Maybe now Dany will believe in Jorah’s loyalty to her (heavy eye roll here).

It was always so DARK that it was hard for me to tell what was going on.

One thing I’ve learned over the years in GOT - if you do not literally see the character die, the character is not dead.
Thus was a dark episode and fighting intense - it would have been hard to put in emotional death scenes. I believe over the remaining episodes we will definitely see some of those involving our beloved characters.

A few things I liked-

Greyworm afraid. He’s no longer just a mindless Unsullied. He has things and people to live for.

Theon dying a heroic death. He deserves it.

“What do we say to the God of Death?” “Not today.”

Arya and the Hound protecting each other.

The “This is it. Let’s make our deaths count” moment between Sansa and Tyrion.

Arya’s ninja warrior moves on the Wights. That girl is a badass.

Things I didn’t-

GRR, munch, thwack. Zombie movies bore me.

The way every character seemed to have a “surrounded by undead, no way out, succumbing to the hordes, but wait!” moment as some other character valiantly, and against the odds, saved them from the undead masses. Perhaps this was a logical follow-up to the episode before in which they all bond and past beefs are put aside in the service of saving humanity.

Um, you have dragons, right? But you’re not going to use them until the undead have slaughtered half your army and the other half is in close hand to hand combat with them?

Bran. If there was a point to his cutting out to become the Three Eyed Raven I didn’t catch it. Was it to lure the Night King to him? And what was the plan behind using him as bait? Who was supposed to take out the Night King? Surely they weren’t relying on Theon and Arya.

Liked and disliked at the same time-

RIP House Mormont. Logical but sad.

I loved this episode too, even though I don’t usually like the fighting episodes (hated Battle of the Bastards.)

Although - can I say that I am really, really bummed about Lady Marmont? Seriously, HBO - I was all in for the spin-off series, “Lady Lyanna of Bear Island.”

Also, can someone please tell Jon Snow/Aegon Targaryen (and maybe Daenerys too) how to plan and execute a battle strategy? Seems to me like they spent most of the battle flying around in that snow-fog before they fell off their dragons. Good thing that SOMEone had her eye on the prize. “Not today,” indeed.

Loved the sense of doom at the beginning when the Dothraki were essentially obliterated at the very start of the battle. Loved the whole Arya arc and the reappearance of Melisandre. And one of my favorite parts was Tyrion and Sansa together in the crypt - so cool when he kissed her hand.

Didn’t we say that the crypt WASN’T SAFE?

Finally, the musical score was amazing. Well done.

I think the plan was for Jon Snow to kill the Night King, but he abandoned that when Dany couldn’t bear to sit by and watch her troops slaughtered. They flew away and left it to poor Theon.

It was really a terrible plan from the beginning. They had dragons. They could have scouted and known how large the army was. Since they already had the theory that if the killed Night King, the rest would fall, they really should have evacuated everyone – including the armies – south. Then they could have used Bran to Lure the King with a small guard (as they did) and killed him with very little loss of life to everyone else. Apparently, these folks have never played D&D.

I think they writers did it this way for dramatic impact AND to reduce Jon and Dany’s forces so it will seem like Cercei has a reasonable chance. I was very surprised they left her two dragons. Odds seem far to staked against Cercei to keep this interesting.
