Gas cooktop fire problem- help needed

So now that my heart rate has come back from the ozone, let me seek the guidance of wise cc posters. So we almost had a fire in the kitchen (I am going back to not cooking!) The gas seemed to leak out from one of the burners and came up around the 4 knobs. DH thinks the feed to the burner is blocked. Does anyone know how to fix this?

To clarify, the flames came up from the knobs and sorta shot out from the one malfunctioning burner.Wven when we turn the dhtem off, the flames persisted and kept coming back. Scared about both a gas leak and a clogged gas line to the burner. DH will look at it, but its not his skill base. Will probably need to call the repair guy. Anyone experience anything like this?

Yikes, jym. I would leave it to the pros!

Uh oh! We don’t mess around with gas. Can you turn it off??

How frightening! Agree, call the pros. I always have had a gas stove, but have never heard of anything like this.

OK! Glad you and yours are safe.
I can figure out how to fix ANYTHING but I would not fix this even if I was sure how.
Turn the gas off and call a repair service.
Be safe.

Please let us know.
I am betting on a clogged gas line the is diverting to your knob.
Which you cannot repair. Probably will have a new line run but not a really big deal
and under $500.

The front 2 burners are fine, but the back two are not. Our repair guy is coming tomorrow sometime.

Glad you are bringing in the pros. Even Mr. B who would normally dig into this kind of stuff said, “Call a plumber.” Maybe it is time for a new cooktop… Thermador makes really good ones.

Yes, turn off the gas line.
Don’t cook on that until the pro clears it.
Good chance to go out.

Seriously…I wouldn’t use that cooktop at all unless it’s checked out.

Hoping the repair person has fixed it by now.

Otherwise eat out!

I rarely cook anyway!

:open_mouth: X_X Repair guy here. We looked at unclogging the gas lines, considered unsealing the cooktop, etc. Then we realized the cleaning ladies had accidentally reversed the back two burners. That was the problem. Easy fix. 8-}

Wow! Scary but glad it’s been safely fixed.

Holy JPMorgan! Glad that it was an easy fix, but geez it looks like a design flaw! Yikes.

What’s that mean, reversed them? Never heard of such.

Are they different size burners

Yes, it’s a flat cooktop and the burners are different sizes, so you can use a smaller or larger one when needed. Only the size of the biggest and smallest are very obvious. When he had them off I commented that they are labeled a,b,c, and d. Then we looked at each with an “ooh of course” look. And sure enough…

Not a design flaw. The slightly different size burners allow for cooking efficiency. Doesn’t allow for operator error!

If you look carefully (these are similar models) you can see the burners under the grate are slightly different sizes. They have to fit correctly on the part below where the gas comes out.

That is a design flaw. If the burner will light up with the wrong cap on it and shoot fire everywhere.

Glad you called an expert, @jym626 - gas stoves are great, but they can be dangerous. I have had issues with flames shooting out if I clean the burner plate and don’t put it back on just right. Things have to line up just so.
