Does colleges know whether a student is in GATE or not? and does it tie any factor into admission?

I would like to know this too. I’m in the GATE program at my high school and I think it should count for something. I mean the classes in GATE are just as hard as some ap and honors classes.

Umm…if the program is in a school with a proven track record of G&T programs then yes. If the G & T program is relatively new then probably not.

I was in the GATE summer program for the maximum # of years (until 8th grade)…then when I got to high school, they still had “GATE”, but it was more SAT Prep classes outside of school…and museum and opera trips outside of school…so I don’t think I’ll mention that. Should I?

I was in the GATE program since 1st grade I hope it pays off :o

I’m including it…we have seminars we can go to

BEACON is what it’s called

You guys still have that crap in high school?

It isn’t like a class…it’s like offered like every 3 months…you can get out of school for one day:)

Oh…at my school it is a class level. You have college-prep which is above average level. And then there is GATE level which the classes are just as hard as honors courses, but you don’t get a grade bump. And then after GATE you have honors and ap classes.

Our GATE program basically academics field trips where we learn about different places. I think they also sponsor achieving students with grants, but that’s all I know about it.

I’d really like to know how adcoms will weigh GATE since I’m involve with it.

I doubt it’s worth anything.

in my school they call it TAG. talented and gifted.

My middle school called it GATE as well.

Some kids would call the GATE students “gay” students because well it sounded sort of a like. :(

My school’s GT program meets for one class period every week in the library (librarian’s the sponsor). We do independent studies, job shadows, and stuff like that…but it’s not that big of a deal. I don’t think I ever listed it on anything.

The GATE system here seems to somewhat die out upon entrance to high school.

Same with my high school. I went to the classes in elementary school once a week, and it got me into higher math classes in junior high, but I never even considered including it on any applications. I doubt that it would actually impress any schools, although our program was probably different than others.

My situation is totally different. I am in G/T classes at my school (they only go through 11th grade) but students had to be identified as gifted and talented in third grade. Then they categorized us (musical, artistic, academic, intellectual, leadership). I entered my district in seventh grade, so the screening was a bit different for me. And the cutoff IQ for my classes is 120. Should I mention this?

If the majority of GT programs are like the one at my school, it’s just BS. I pretty much only did it for the job shadowing experiences.

Don’t include the IQ thing…I mean why? You have to have a high IQ to get into GT any how. Also, many of the top scorer and applicants will have high IQs anyhow.

after middle school, GATE became pretty meaningless. there isn’t a difference whether you’re in GATE or not at my high school.
