Hey! Does anyone know the specific date that we will hear if we are selected as scholars are not? Soo nervous!!

@starju13 I called and the representative said around the 15th-19th… 0: so definitely in the next two weeks

From old threads on this site, it appears they usually are mailed on the 15th. But, who knows if that is accurate. Soon, that is the answer…

Thank you!!

OMG the 15th!? How would they possibly get it out that fast if the document deadline was the 8th?

@ brightbluebirds: I think we are already ranked 1-2000. As those who don’t meet the gpa/pell qualifications or fail to submit documents are dropped, those at the bottom of the ladder begin to climb up the ladder. I think that’s why they select 2000 as opposed to just the minimum 1000. That is my theory on the selection process. Maybe someone else has something concrete.

AZScholar - or any current Gates scholar - i have heard that letters are sent to those that didnt make the cut. And that a package or big envelope arrives for those that win the scholarship. Does the package come from the Post Office, or is it a Federal Express or a UPS or something? Is it an overnight thing or regular deliver? Do the packages arrive before the letters?

scuba9026 i think your right, that we are already ranked or have a score or something. Since there are already 500 finalists in each group, would the winners be the top 250 hispanics, top 250 african americans, like that?

@ Southern5062 I am a current scholar (Class of 2011), and to answer your question… Yes you are correct, if you did not receive the scholarship, you will receive a letter stating you didn’t. If you did receive the scholarship, you will receive a huge packet telling you that you are a recipient. To my knowledge, the packet is sent via regular mail. Also, the packages and letters are sent at the same time. Hope this helps! Best of luck and congrats for making it this far.

Any finalists (and scholars) planning to attend UCLA?

im an asian (from CA) planning to attend there.

Also congrats to all thsoe who are finalist. The talk of april 15th is driving me INSANE. just one more week…

im grateful that i have made it this far.

Wish everyone the best.

Question to AZScholar - thanks to dwjohnny93 for answering about how winners and nonwinners are notified. he thinks the packet comes regular mail. AZScholar, do you remember how the big packet arrived? I am at a school math competition out of state most of that week (15 through 19) and that makes me really nervous !!!Thanks for answering all of our questions by the way - youve been really helpful!

The fact that I haven’t received any email/ mail as of today… does that mean i am not thrown out of the 200 or how many there are pile??received

Wait, did anyone get a confirmation email or anything after submitting documents. Mine were submitted last week, so I’m curious as to whether I was supposed to receive anything…

Hey! Can any current scholar explain to me exactly what is covered by the Gates scholarship? Like will my parents have to pay anything? Or is everything covered? Including books, room and board? Thanks in advance!

@southern I received my packet in the post office. It’s a huge envelope, while denied students recieve a regular mail envelope. My friend who is a gates scholar was delivered to her mail box at her house.

@starju The Gates Millennium Scholarship is considered a “last dollar scholarship” which means it will pay form your unmet need through financial aid.

Example:

Institutions Cost of Attendance: $30,000
Pell Grant: $3,000
EFC: 1250
Other scholarships or grants: $10,000

So basically you have $13,000 paid for going towards your COA. Gates will pay for the $17,000 that is unmet.

Your EFC is also deducted from your Gates funding. So say your EFC is 1250. Your family is expected to contribute that much towards your college attendance.

@starju YES, everything is paid for room, board, books, tuition. It’s a full ride scholarship.

I have a question @Azscholar17, I am a finalist for the GMS program. I understand decisions will be sent out withe the next week or so and wanted to know if I should I be expecting a an email or an actual envelope as mentioned earlier? or both?

Azscholar17:

Can the family contribution be covered by student loans?

@midori you will expecting notification through the mail.

@spider I would assume so, but loans are not a good option because interest rates are expecting to increase this year. But I don’t see why not. I may be wrong through. I don’t have any student loans.
