Gates Millenium Scholarship Official Thread 2013

Your work study contribution will also be covered by GMSP.

@Azscholar17
ok cool. hey thank you so much for coming online to take inquires. I’m sure that all of us are very eager to find answers. I’ve read alot of your posts and they’ve all been very helpful.

@midori thank you! I was eager like all of you guys last year. I had so many questions when I applied but didn’t know who to ask. But I’m glad that I can help, I do a lot of community outreach in assisting with the scholarship. This scholarship changes your life. I pray that all of you receive it :)

@azscholar,

My dd is currently a junior and plans on applying to GMSP. Do you know how many students applied this application cycles? Or the last cycle? How selective is the process?

Through reading last year’s forums and different online information, last year 24,000 students applied. The rejection letters that went out this stated that 54,000 applications were received.

I’d like to know from some of the finalists at what point was your application submitted. For example, we started working on this scholarship two weeks out, but I know of them started working on it 6 months out.

One student who received the scholarship last year, said she worked on it the day it was due. I just wonder if timing plays a factor as well.

Good luck to all the finalist! Let the inhaling of anxiety begin with Monday fast approaching.

What will happen if I receive the GMS, but my university has offered me a financial aid packet that already covers everything? Will the scholarship be cancelled out, or will it just take the place of my financial aid help?

@scuba9026 i started working on the essays around October and ended up submitting it around 11 am the day it was due.

See, we submitted the final essay at 10:30 p.m. CST the day it was due. I just wonder if there are any finalists that submitted their essays earlier than the date it was due.

@newhavenmom each year its becoming more competive. my year (2012) it was 24,000 applicants, and this year (2013) it was 54,000. so its very competive. and dpends on the division your with (african american, ispanic, asian Pacific Islanders, Native American).

@stagflation if you want you can replace it, or you can defer your scholarship for another year. so i heard

AZScholar17 and any other past winners - I believe I read that Gates does notify your nominator and recommender if you win or don’t win. Do they receive a letter just like finalists or do they get an email? I am wondering if they find out before I do cause I am out of town at a math competition next week and cant get mail till I get home.

AZ Scholar17 - another question. Do the notifications (letters and/or big white packets) get mailed from Gates in Washington DC or from your minority group? I am Hispanic in SouthEast Florida and since Hispanic Scholarship Fund mails from California, I was the last to get my finalist letter. Wondering where these are mailed from?

So I applied to NYU and I am waitlisted. In a case where I don’t get into NYU, I will attend Creighton University. Also in a scenario where I get the GMS, I will apply for a transfer during my freshman year at Creighton University. What will I need to get accepted to NYU and will Gates be just the financial help or a attractive aspect on a student’s profile for NYU? I would highly appreciate if you guys could help me out. Thanks

@southern it’s mailed from Gates Headquaters, not minority division offices. And nominations and recommendors are not notified at all if you are a Gates Scholar, you will be notified first.

I know it was discussed earlier that GMSP will cover the work-study. But isn’t the work-study money you earn for extra spending (like for the essentials)? So does GMSP just pay that money directly to your university or they give it to you (almost like a stipend)? Thanks.

@Stagflation29 As I understand it (explained by a Gates Employee) the scholarship is a “last dollar in” scholarship, meaning that AFTER whatever the school (or other source(s)) have awarded you, but BEFORE work study, Student contribution and Parent contribution, Gates will pay the balance. You do not get to “double-dip” nor will you “lose” one or the other.

@spidermc25 Work-study is NOT extra spending money. In most awards, Personal Expenses and Travel are included in the Estimate of Need. Work-study is provided to offset the Total Cost, including the personal and travel. If you didn’t travel or didn’t need deodorant, you could use some portion of your award as spending money. Since Work-Study results in a check in your hand, it could be seen as discretionary but, it IS a portion of your award and you will be expected to apply it toward books or other necessaries… not simply discretionary purchases. Make sense?

Spidermc, Gates sent my D’s work study check to her school each semester then the
bursar’s office cut her a check.

kinnikinik & GA2012MOM:

Thanks! I think I understand it now.

I’m new to the forum scene in general, but I had a question for this community of individuals involved in the GATES Scholars program.

I was selected as a finalist, and I submitted my additional materials, but the college admittance letter I submitted was not the college I declared as my first choice in the original application, because I was wait-listed to that college.
My question is whether or not this will affect my chances of receiving the scholarship.
Thank you!

^
No, you just need to submit any acceptance letter.

@cver No it does not. One you are a Scholar, you will recieve an email stating that you need to log on to your GMS Portal and confirm a institution you will be attending, then you will need to fax or mail the acceptance letter of your final choice of school.
