Gates Millenium Scholarship Official Thread 2013

Hispanic finalist from Donna, TX here. I am the only finalist from my school ,so no pressure…

I was just getting home when the UPS was dropping off a packet to my neighbor. My heart sank since it did not stop at my house, but I suppose it will not be until Wednesday that I get something from what I have been reading in these posts :c

Anyone else from the RGV?

Any finalists from Alabama?

Your packet will arrive via regular USPS, not UPS or FedEx. You will know it when you see it, it is easily the size of a legal pad and much thicker. Good luck all.

Thanks for clearing that up :)

@GA2012MOM - How long did it take to receive the package?

^
Back when my daughter was a Gates Scholar 5 years ago, they didn’t mail out everything on the same day. Different people got their packet’s over the span of several weeks. You guys are lucky, at least you know when it is coming.

I’m so nervous right now. Waiting is the worst part. :(

Anyone in Arizona receive anything? I wish they’d send out an email first… hate waiting!

How are the scholarship recipients chosen?
Do they only look at our essays and recommendation?

@Duncan1 I go to the Mississippi school for mathematics and science.

How long do you guys think it’ll take for it to get here ? Do you think their mail was flown from dc or do you think it’s grounded? I’m sure it makes a difference.

I think I’m a bit late. Haha.
But GREETINGS!
I am a finalist from Tyler, Texas! Anybody familiar?
I attend John Tyler High School. There are a total of 4 finalists from my high school.
3 African-Americans and 1 Hispanic. (I’m African-American). We’re all waiting with patience to find out our fate.

I don’t think I have seen any finalist from Texas on here. Am I wrong?
We’re very excited.

In last year’s Gates scholarship thread it was that
350 African American
350 Hispanic
150 Native, Pacific Islander
150 asian

receive the scholarship.

This year it was said on this thread that 250 get it from each ethnicity.

Does anyone know which is true?

I’ve been wondering if that’s true as well.

@MiniKidd

There are some Texans on here, including me. Welcome!

I’m Asian from Georgia. Is anyone else from Georgia?
I think one other person from my school was a finalist.
A past scholar I met said that it was about 250 students from each ethnicity becomes a scholar.

What would be a good start for a sophomore aiming for this scholarship?

Is anyone else from New York? Trying not to be anxious or nervous for the decisions

@elan913 i think it’s great that you are getting a head start. I think for the most part, the essays stay the same, so take a look at the 8 topics and see what ideas you have now. But definitely build on your ECs and classes as you go along. Also, I’m sure you have a story to tell like everyone else here and that’s the most important thing.

Yeah I’m an African American finalist from Alabama. I’m on the edge just waiting for my fate to come in the mailbox.

I’m from Georgia! African American finalist. There’s only 1 other finalist in my school and she’s African American too. And a Hispanic guy won from my school last year.
