MICHMUM-who’s your daughter?
I’m Willie McClure

@newhavenctmom i dont think having the highest grades, scores, or a million hours is what they are looking for. I am so surprised I got it because compared to others on here, I didn’t have that many hours or ECs even. I think it’s mainly the story. Having a story to tell and telling it well.

Congratulations to all of the scholars! We just found out that my daughter is a Gates Millennium Scholar!!! She’s Native American from Oklahoma. Good luck to all of those still waiting to hear!

Ok! Thank you…Is this scholarship better than QB? Or are they equal?

I remember you from Classical! As you know by now, Jade is my daughter. I’m so happy for the both of you.

@Queenm860
thank you so much. no mail today, hoping for tomorrow or Saturday I can’t wait!! omg the suspense is killer.

OMGGG I got the Gates as well!!

Asian from CA

BTW, any gates scholars going to UCLA?

@SciMan:
man hey what part of California? I’m in SoCal and I haven’t heard anything yet.

@NewHavenCTmom

I started looking at app about a week before due date and i submitted 5 min before original deadline. NOT SMART!!! I was flipping out because the website didnt work about 1hr before deadline. and i spammed email the email they gave for help and was freaking out SO MUCH. It worked FINALLY and then they extended it for a hour compared to original deadline.

ALL FUTURE APPLICANTS submit WAYYYY early to save you tons of stress.

@midoriaapples:

i am in central valley of Northern CA. also wierd b/c ppl said that LA found out on tuesday. I hope for the best for you. Where are you going next fall?

I’m in San Diego and I haven’t received anything yet. I’m so anxious. Does it matter if we receive our decision later, should I be ready for a rejection?

I dont think so gmark. some ppl got rejection letters before me. i think its location and the efficientcy of ur post office crew/location

Thank You! And I really hope so! And congrats, I might be attending UCLA as well :)

African American Daughter from Oklahoma City is a Gates Scholar!!! I fell to my knees when I saw the big envelope in the mail box. So many doors just opened for her future. What a blessing! Congratulations and much love to everyone who is a finalist or scholar. Letter says that 2 e-mails will be sent out tomorrow, Friday, April 19 which will be an e-mailed version of the letter and the 2nd e-mail will be your GMS ID and designation of which school you will attend.

For those who requested that we post our stats, here they are. But everyone is different. I agree that telling your story well in essay form is the MOST important. Don’t get hung up because you do or don’t have certain qualities. Where you excel in one area another may not. Where another excels in a certain area, you may not. You are all unique and deserving of this scholarship. But start early on those essays. They were a bear to get together in 2 weeks!

STATS:
4.47 GPA Weighted
3.78 Unweighted GPA
26 ACT (so don’t be discouraged if you have a low ACT)
Attends International Baccalaureate school and takes all IB classes.
Took hard electives like Anatomy and Latin (no easy electives)
African American Female
600 hours community service
Varsity Cheer Captain
President, President, Vice President, Historian, etc. of Business Professionals of America, Spanish Club, Key Club, National Honor Society Liaison, Latin Honor Society.
Very involved in church community services activities, Summer Bible School volunteer, etc.
Worked babysitting, pet sitting and at family business in summers and during school breaks.
Is an excellent writer and wrote the hell out of those essays. Wrote long essays on every question with nearly 1000 of the word count used.
Single parent family
Didn’t fill out essays early. Started 2 weeks before due. Wouldn’t recommend that. A lot of stress. Submitted essay on date they were due about 5 minutes before deadline. Nominator and recommender submitted on due date.
Also, she all A’s on Senior transcript, but one C in IB Math plus B’s on Science and Math in years past. So there’s hope for you if you don’t have perfect grades. So to the Sophomores and Juniors who are questioning if they are “good” enough to apply, DO IT! Do not think that you shouldn’t apply if you have a less than perfect transcript or less than perfect ACT. This scholarship is about finding LEADERS, not a perfect ACT score! Just tell your personal story, the good bad and the ugly, and make them want to give you the scholarship!

@AnotherOKMom - Congratulations to you and your family!!

Oh how good it feels to say I am a 2013 Gates Scholar! Donna, Texas y’all ^0^/

All week I have been stressed and ill, but it was awesome to come home today, open the mailbox, see a large white envelope and scream, " I got it!" After that I ran inside, opened the envelope and there was my certificate :’) The best part about this scholarship, for me, is that I can now inspire and enlighten younger students and show them it is possible to achieve great things ^-^

@stagflation29 - That’s probably why you got this scholarship. . . your “give back attitude” to the other younger students probably shined through in your essays. Congratulations!

@MomfromOklahoma- that’s what I have been thinking. Many of my essays revolved around this “giving back” idea but because that is what I most want not because I thought it would get me the scholarship; I truly did not think I would get it and Thank You ^-^

Now I’m thoroughly confused! There is no rhyme or reason to the mailing - Donna, TX before Corpus Christi, Texas?

I am an Asian Gates scholar from Illinois :)

@scuba9026- I’m not sure why, but I’m sure you will be told by tomorrow! Yesterday when I read about the first scholar from Texas on this forum, I knew mine would be coming in either today or tomorrow (today in my case). Don’t worry, you’ll get it soon and good luck :)

i read somewhere that all get emails tomorow, so either way you WILL know tomorow
