Woo Hoo! My D (daughter) received notice on 13th in DC. Gates is the ONE.
I am not clear how this affects her graduate school status. I read that students receive two years of aid toward a graduate degree. What if she wants to attend medical school? Don’t mean to sound greedy, but we too are long range planners.

It is important that those second phasers that made it to correct their FASFA to be as accurate as possible. Why? The reason being (1) the school of your choice will base how much fin aid you will be getting and (2) the amount of fin aid that the school gives you will directly afffect how much aid GATES will give you if you are selected to be a GATES scholar. The best thing to do, is not to leave any where you know your parents have information for, if anything use last year’s tax return (2004 tax return) if your parents income didnt change that much and you can always change your FASFA later when you get your 2005 tax return that way you have a much more accurate estimation on your FASFA.

For those that may have already sent their stuff, its ok just make sure that if you need to make corrections to your FASFA, DO IT. You can send your updated FASFA to your schools and they can update you possible fin aid award.

yeah i used it for last years tax return…my parents will make about the same i dont think theres going to be any change. Do i still need to update it if thats the case? Also,. will the fact that i didnt send in the updated fasfa hinder my chances of becoming a scholar. i still qualify for pell, but will they wait until i update it?

By second phase, do yall mean the after we submit our application, they will notify us if we are finalists or not? I did a paper application and so I don’t noe if this ruin my chance or not. I have not been notify yet, and I’m asian and live in Houston, TX.

Yeah, i twas with the Asian and Pacific Islander group or something like that. I don’t have the letter on me right now so I don’t remember for sure. I’ll reply as soon as I find out though.

Still waiting for an update. I wonder when UNCF will finally decide to send out second phase notices. How typical for the Black organization to be the late one.

Gr, I don’t qualify for Pell apparently. Even though my family income is lower than some who do qualify, we apparently have too many investments. But we never even touch those, and they’re worth about 20% of what they originally were (stocks from a long time ago). I’m sure I could explain my situation, but is GMSP very very strict about this rule? Should I even bother sending the information in…?

Are you sure? I tried to connect with a friend who was in the inaugural group
of scholars. She now is in 2nd year at John Hopkins Med and receives money
from Gates Millenium. I remember reading that the intitial class of scholars, students in grad school were allowed to apply. Only the first year. hmm My friend studies and will do research after medical. Would that make a difference??
