the gates website is sooo slow and doesnt work on windows vista.

makes me so mad sometimes.

yeah i know the website is really slow…and the email account doesn’t even work. i emailed myself from my hotmail account but i never received the email on the gatesscholar account.

a question, how much money is your college/gates giving you for personal expenses? and can you break it down into travel, books, computer, misc, etc?

it all depends on your school…

i can’t login to my scholars webpage…is anyone else having that problem??

so will gates reimburse me for my housing deposit and SIR fee?

help!

i e-mailed my college financial aid counselor about the gates scholarship, but she said:

Thanks for your email. The Gates scholarship will only cover your federal work study of $. Gates cannot help cover your student contribution, insurance or laptop expenses. If you have any questions please let me know.

i know gates does not cover student contribution, but they should cover insurance, laptop, and personal expenses like book or travel, right? i’m going to call them, but any advice on how i should go about explaining it to them?

also, another question. i have no loans in my package. is there any way i can convert my student contribution into a loan and have gates pay for it?

hey elizabeth!!!
i have no idea about the loan issue but the school i’m going to (Rice University) made my gates package include: travel, books, supplies, a laptop AND insurance!!! tell your school that other schools change the financial aid package so that those things are available for you! what school are you going to???

P.S. I hope it all works out for you!!!

@elizabeth… sorry to hear that but that really depend on the school…some refused to change their COA…if you persuade her enough maybe they will say yes…but it all depends…

me…being lucky…gates will need to cover a 2500 laptop and a 2000 health insurance…

i have an appointment set up w/ my financial aid counselor for this friday - this way i could personally sit w/ her and discuss everything.
besides laptop and insurance, what else should i ask her for? so r counselors willing to change ur FA letter if u ask them to?

just a thought, the deadline to send the letter back is May 22nd. How long are you guys going to wait before submitting that?

do gates scholars get a free laptop

I’m not sure if Gates works differently with different universities, but my school told me that Gates will cover my student contribution, health insurance, and laptop.

It will also cover a work study, but I don’t have that as a first-year. My school also eliminated loans for most students.

And no, Gates scholars do not get a “free” laptop. It simply covers the cost of 1 laptop per 4 years of undergrad. There is also a price max. depending on the institution.

grrr…my counselor said that she can’t add cost of a laptop to my personal expenses b/c she has to abide strictly by institutional policies and the cost of a laptop doesn’t reflect the “entire student body” … she said that if i could have a gates person talk to her, she will add the cost but otherwise no. what do you think i should do?

call a gates person.

anyone know what laptop they’re getting?
I wanna get the Macbook Pro 2008 edition? is this good?

well I just bought a macbook pro last month…I know there will be a new one coming out…but my financial aid officer told to me buy one asap…
oh btw…i love it.!!! amazing!!!

grrrr…my fin aid counselor won’t add funds for a laptop on my FA. what should i do? anyone? please, i need help!

I don’t know how different schools do it, but the cost of a laptop ISN’T being put on my FA. It’s more like, I buy the laptop first. Submit the receipts to my school, and then they will contact GMS and I will be reimbursed.
