Gates Millennium Scholarship 2009-2010

Hey banjo… when did u submit all ur stuff? way before the deadline or right at the deadline?

i’ve researched the heck out of Gates scholarship

in the 2006-2007 there were “more than 12,000 applicants”

http://www.gmsp.org/Img/UserDir/docs/GMS%20Annual%20Report.pdf

there is NO WAY in HE** that number went from 12k applicants in 2007 to 60k applicants in 2008.

please support your assertions with links.

if we are prudent in our estimations, i think it’s safe to say there were about 15k applicants this year.

from what i know, they HAVE NEVER released any official number specifying how many applicants got the award.

as said said earlier, they only release # of applicants and number of scholars (1000)

Funny story actually…that night…i was sitting at the dinner table…and i telling my mom…i couldnt do the dishes…cause i had to turn in the application by 12…and she was like…is that pacific time (which applied to me)…or central…& i was like …Oh X|…so a/ws i turned it in around 3 hours before the deadline =)

xxglasskidxx…I’m from Chicago too! I am also hispanic but i haven’t gotten anything in the mail or email, so your message makes me even more depressed :frowning: and I thought that I was sending my application in on time but I forgot about the time zone differences, and I am central time so I am afraid they didn’t even consider mine b/c it says it was an hour late…stupid time zones.

Carlos, you are right! I went to a workshop over the scholarship and they said this year it was estimated to be around Fifteeeeenn to 17, 000 or so.

tomato – did you get a confirmation through e-mail? If so, I’m sure it went through fine. Also, have some faith. If someone received an e-mail today, I feel a bit better. Finalist letters are still rolling out, so believe.

Yah I guess ur right lulu, thanks for the reassurance. I guess its just easier to be pessimistic. But I will just wait n see, I guess there is still hope if they are still being sent out.

haha, it’s so weird when people call me lulu on this thing. i feel ya, though. It is difficult to be optimistic in times like these. Still, things will work out. Mm, the wait…

Ok soo… someone in Chicago and someone in Carolina got a letter in the mail… are they delivering this stuff alphabetically or nah? what do u guys think?

i dont think its alphabetical… i mean, my last name is diaz :\ i feel like i’d have gotten something by now…

Hispanic
MD
Hernandez
Finalist: Tuesday

i think if you don’t know by now, you’ll get a sorry letter in the mail.

Thanks for the hope alex hernandez…

you are of great help alex hernandez…

you’re probably right, alex. oh well x] i knew it was probably unlikely i’d get the scholarship anyway… i want to go to art school and most people think art isn’t worth funding. well, congratulations to the rest of you who got it! and to the rest who didn’t, like i said this isnt the only thing. there are thousands of scholarships out there. you are not destined for loans. just keep working hard. :]

Theres no sense in giving false hope. Everyone has something out there for them, and not getting this scholarship doesn’t mean that you’ll be a failure. You weren’t selected for a reason, that which only GMS can disclose.

I’ve come to terms with the situation and I am pretty content with everything, but I still don’t think it is “false hope.” Negative energy only brings more negative energy, so I think we should each just hold onto the faith. Even if we are not chosen, what matters most is how we react to the news. Receiving a college education is what matters most. Still, I honestly have faith that more people will be selected as finalist. Positive energy brings positive energy, so best of luck everyone! And yes, congrats to the finalist who have been chosen! :D

OK so I did my own little experimentation from all we said and I cam to the conclusion that:

Monday: African Americans were notified
Tuesday: Hispanics were notified
Wed. :asians were notified
Native Americans I am believeing on Monday too…

if you have anything that contradicts my theory please due tell we are all hoping…

I am pretty sure you are correct, klumsy. ;

klumsy, you are correct regarding email notifications. but i believe that all snail mail was sent out on monday. on my paper, it said it was mailed monday, and i am asian.

good luck everyone!

i just got my letter today

are the finalists getting their letters today (and perhaps tomorrow)? when is the latest time we could get the finalist letters? does anyone know?

Im going to die from waiting…
