Gates Millennium Scholarship 2009-2010

So I got my rejection letter in the mail today. Im glad I thought of a Plan B because I wasnt even gonna go to college if not…Soooooooo on to a state school I go. Good luck to everyone who is a finalist! Good luck with becoming a scholar!

Msmusic, where are you from? Im from Texas but I havent received anything… =/ has anyone from Texas received a letter of rejection??

I got a rejection letter today from Gates Millennium Scholars - United Negro College Fund.

The funny thing is though, well… I’m not black, and I didn’t apply.

Im from Atlanta, GA and just received the letter today :(

Hey those who unfortunately didnt make it…why do you believe you didnt make it

same here…
i’m from houston
no e-mail or letter whatsoever

Anybody knows of someone that didnt receive an e-mal but when the letters arrived got notified as a finalist??

x] finally got my rejection letter. haha im not upset at all because i had so long to reflect on it. in response to jfbycc, i don’t think i got it because i want to major in art, and most people dont take art seriously. i want to help people with my art, though. i want to be a teacher and a children’s book illustrator and work for non profits and stuff. not getting this scholarship doesnt affect my goals in the least, and it shouldnt affect the rest of yours either! push yourself to keep applying to scholarships and it’s totally doable!!
but yeah, i’m pretty sure that’s why because i had gms people edit my essays at workshops and i worked on them for a month, my grades are really good, and i volunteer constantly.

so yeah… this scholarship would have been great, but i don’t need it to accomplish my dreams. sure, it would have been a hell of a lot easier, but i’m used to life not being easy by now x]

congrats congrats congrats to all of you who got it. i wish you the best :)

[oh btw i’m from chicago]

xxglasskidxx…i believe in you… and you are completely correct in saying that this scholarship shouldn’t affect our lifelong goals…

but thanks for saying congrats to the finalists… THIS BATTLE ISNT OVER YET though…I WISH IT would be (some won’t make the next ‘cut’)… i hate suspense. i want a yes or a no NOW so i can move on with my life lol

I, too want that letter saying Yes or No, though I want it to say Yes. I would appreciate it so much if I could think about my financial situation as little as possible and not have to worry. It would compensate so much for the first 18 years :).

i’d like to add that I toooo want a Yes letter… obviously. my twin sister and i would be eternally grateful since our early lives have been so tumultuous/SAD… lol. seriously

i mean, i hadn’t even told my parents about this gates scholarship just b/c i didnt want to raise their hopes up… but i just had to tell them …today …about being a finalist…now i regret it.

Hi everyone,
at this point in time should it be safe to assume that a finalist notification is not going to happen if there has been no contact whatsoever via email/phone/letter?

thatzxlife30, I would send them an email and ask them about it. I sent an email about something and they replied by email the same day. I think you should know by now if you are a finalist because letters went out besides emails. But you never know, letters can get lost in the mail. You haven’t gotten a rejection letter yet. Check with your nominator and recommender and see if they heard anything.

thatzxlife30, Also, it seems like there are others who haven’t gotten letter or email yet. maybe they are leaving their options open on some decisions because you never know how many will get weeded out just on the pell eligibility alone and i don’t think they ever come up short of 1000 scholars. If they had say 1500 finalists and 800 of them turned out to not be eligible for whatever reason, that would leave only 700 scholars. That wouldn’t work, so maybe they keep some decisions in reserve… some that maybe they thought of rejecting as finalists but were on the edge to becoming finalists… maybe they hold that group in reserve to fill slots of finalists that are ineligible… kind of like a waiting list… one thing for sure, they wouldn’t let themselves come up short of 1000 scholars.

I had an audio production major. I dont think they took my major seriously at all. But its ok because I still will achieve whatever I need to achieve without this scholarship…it would have been a big help though lol but I’ll still make it :)

I just got my rejection letter and I had my application in hours before the deadline. So if it is done on a rolling basis, I believe that played a factor, however I never really though I would win such a competitive scholarship. I believe that Monday will be the last day and by then everyone should know if they are a finalist or not.

Hey everyone, I got my rejection letter today and I live in Ohio. The letter said that this year there was about 20500 people who applied and only 1000 were chosen. This means that everyone had about a 5% chance of getting it though it seems like a lot of people have chosen as finalists.
Also I think that one important factor for being chosen is the community service and essay, not the major. (I wish I had known years before to do every possible community service activity). There is a girl in my school who doesn’t do extracurriculars at school, doesn’t take any challenging classes and who has decent grades and she was chosen as a finalist. I think its because of her community service and essays.
Anyways, there are still a ton of scholarships out there that aren’t due until april or may so everyone still has a chance to pay for college. AND you don’t have to get all your scholarships for the next 4 years now because there are scholarships for college freshmen, college sophomores and etc. You can find scholarships in fastweb.com. There was a thread about scholarships that had all the websites that you guys can check out as well. There is no reason to feel down. Like the saying goes “when one door closes, another door opens” so we (rejects) can still make it! Yeah!

I finally got my rejection letter today! It took forever! I’m glad it’s over and I wish all finalist the best of luck!

hey capital_z,
Did the letter say they chose 1,000 finalists or scholars?
