Gates Millennium Scholarship 2009-2010

woot woot :]
got my rejection letter today
i’m sad, but at least
no more anxiety!

i just got mine too…yay! Finally, all that time thinking I got it and wasn’t notified lmao, good luck to finalists! I knew I wasn’t gonna get it. lmao.

can anyone tell us exactly what the rejection letters say about the number of applicants and finalists? =]

hey banjo09, the rejection letter says 1000 scholarship recipients. it doesn’t say whether or not they are finalists or scholars.

Got mine and laughed it out with my friends. Of course I am mad but more than anything annoyed but I’ll quickly move on so no worries there.

Letter says:
This year, we faced a daunting task of selecting 1,000 scholarship recipients from an exceptional and diverse pool of over 20,500 high achieving students. This number of submissions made the 2009 year the most challenging year ever to select finalist from among a very competitive pool of well-rounded candidates.

Boohoo what I’m annoyed with is how certain people at our school got it and two of my friends who are excellent students and one of them is crazy involved with community services and other activities and number one in the class didn’t get it. I mean come on whatever it was, it was terrible luck. That got me upset. Other scholarships to apply for so can’t waste time and energy on the rejection. Life moves on!

There’s more to the letter but nothing important.

here is what the rejection letter says:
“This year, we faced a daunting task of selecting 1000 scholarship recipients from an exceptional and diverse pool of over 20,500 high-achieving students. This number of submissions made the 2009 year the most challenging year ever to select finalists from among a very competitive pool of well-rounded candidates.”
“We regret to inform you that you were not selected as one of the scholarship finalists for the 2009-2010 academic year. Our decision reflects the significantly competitive pool of applicants and in no way diminishes your many personal and academic accomplishments.”

and then it goes on to talk about the other scholarship resources you can explore.

“we are honored to have had the opportunity to consider your application, and we wish you continued success in your future educational endevours”.

thats all. i guess the 1000 chosen ones are finalists.

I got a rejection letter today except…

… I never applied. But it’s the right address, name, etc. Tis a very strange piece of mail to get today…lol.

That’s really amusing!

I’m a FINALIST!!! I got the letter May 9th. I sent all my paperwork yesterday, and got my confirmation of my paperwork being complete yesterday!!!

So now.

The wait begins.

its not may 9th yet. maybe you’re from the future. congrats

I’m from Oklahoma and I received my rejection letter today. I worked super hard on those essays and I suppose it wasn’t really my fault. Maybe I didn’t go into enough detail about my adversities or about why I wanted the scholarship. Also, I only listed two achievements, but I still think they go more into community service and essays. Still, I honestly believe everything happens for a reason.

FUTURE GMS APPLICANTS! Call me crazy, but I actually went on facebook and wrote around 10 scholars from previous years and asked them for help on my essays. (type in gates millennium scholars in the search box) Some gave me advice and two proofread four of my essays. So, do WHATEVER you can to win this scholarship and work hard. I suppose it just wasn’t in my favor, but I still believe you CAN win this scholarship.

Anyway, best of luck finalists!! I’m rooting for you all!! We each have it in us to change the world, whether we win this scholarship or not.

–

“A posse ad esse - From possibility to reality.”

Makes me feel better knowing I only spent 2 hours on the GMS. Saved me a couple of hours on other scholarships. I knew I was never going to get it but best of luck to all finalist!

Ooops. Meant March 9.

I’m a finalist and I e-mailed GMS asking if they got all my materials but they never replied back!
Should i call them?

^ Don’t call them. They’ll e-mail you as soon as they can. Give them a little time to process the paperwork.

I wonder if we get the notice saying we’re scholars about 9-10 days after we submit the paperwork like last year’s scholars did?

If that were true, I would be getting my notification around Wednesday or Thursday. I still have my doubts about not becoming a scholar despite meeting all the GMS requirements.

AvantTao: Why do you say that? From what I’ve seen from past years most of the Finalists end up being Scholars.

Rhomanticist… better safe than sorry. email AND call them… they are open monday-friday 9am-5pm pacific time… i did both things just to make sure they had my stuff.

Oh, I just don’t want to get my hopes up :). I have a lot of things go wrong in my life so I’m just not used to things going my way, but I will say with this month, maybe my luck is turning around :D.
