I am a student from Germany and next year I want to apply to the University of Michigan to study performing arts.
Well, somebody might know that, the entire education system in Germany is very different to the one in the USA, so at the beginning, I was kind of confused, how to prepare myself best for this whole application process for UM. Sure, there are some obvious points, which you can read about directly on the UM website, but nevertheless I still do not really know, how to prepare best and I do not know if I set wrong emphases.
So I already mailed some of my questions directly to the UM admission office, but there are things they can’t or won’t answer me. It would be much better if I talked to a UM student. Even better it would be if he was German/talks german, and the optimum would be if he studied acting.
I do not really know how to find and contact someone like this. So, is here on the forum someonewh is a German performing arts student (even just one of the two attributes would very helpful) or do you know where else I could seek? There are just a few things, that I want to know, which won’t take too long to talk about.^^

Have you called the SMTD admissions office? They will most likely be able to help you much more for specific questions about auditioning and what you need to attach to the Common App (such as a resume, etc.). My daughter is a voice performance major - not acting - so I can’t help you much in that area, but I can tell you that whenever I had a question and called SMTD directly, they were very helpful.

Thank you for your reply saxlady! Indeed, the SMTD admission office was really friendly and reliable but to be honest - altohough I think for a German student I am rather good in the English language - I am kind of scared of calling them. But sure, I know my shyness mustn’t stand in my way there and I will call them. But as a first step I took the save path and wrote an e-mail to them, which appeared to be informative, too.
I will definitely stay in contact with them but at the it would be still very helpful to talk to a student, who passed through this whole application process. But yesterday I received contact information here on the forum I will chance my luck there!

Sometimes it feels like this entire huge College matter is taken way more important in the US compared to Germany and almost all the people I have met during my “journey” is very helpful, which is great. :D

VPhill, I also have a freshman student at U of M, who is studying piano. Another suggestion would be to ask the admissions office to put you in touch with just the sort of person you are hoping to talk to – an acting student who speaks German. It’s worth a try!
We have found the admissions office to be very helpful. I can tell you that there are many, many international students at the School of Music, Theatre and Dance, so I’m sure the admissions office has experience in answering all kinds of questions. And the questions don’t just come from international students – the application process is complicated for all SMTD students, who have to be accepted first by the university and then have to audition for and be accepted into the department. Don’t be shy – this is your future!

thank you for your reply. Your post embolded me a bit, thanks.
And yes, you are right, I should just ask the admission office, if they can help me in my matter.
