Georgetown Transfer Questions

Thank you!!! :D

oh, and congratulations on Duke! :)

Please, I need some advice. I’m an international student, i’ve been out of high school for more than 3 years (it takes 6 to earn a degree in my country) and I applied to the MSB (Finance and Intl Business). I’m a really good student, not the top though and my grades don’t look great because of the harsh grading system. I think I have a good application package though: lots of ECs and community service, really good and specific essays, really good and varied recommendations, I work in an NGO, I’m fluent in 2 languages and profficient in 1, I take a full load at my school + internship, I have traveled widely and studied abroad, I’ve been an intern at an international bank for more than 6 months now, I attended the top hs in my country and I currently attend the top business school in my country (I don’t know if they would care though). I went to Georgetown in January and they told me they could waive the SAT requirement for me as it was a hardship to take it now (I work about 45-50 hours a week + classes) and in my country you don’t have to take it for admission. So I just submitted the toefl ibt (108/120) and my hs record and college grades. However, I STILL TOOK the SAT just in case after studying for one miserable week with work and everything, and I got 1240 (M 670 + CR 570) which I know is bad (Im a good student I could have got a really good score with more study but I don’t have time for anything else) but I’ve seen someone being waitlisted with a lower score. I know it’s really late but do you think it will help me at all if I send them by fax or e-mail, i’m afraid they don’t have enough objective stuff to evaluate me as we don’t use the GPA system, my college has a really harsh grading system and basically what stands out of my application is my background, essays, and recs. Would it hurt my chances (think as if they will actually review it) or help me at all? I thought I had a good chance before reading this forum as you guys have amazing credentials and now I don’t have a clue.

Please flowerhead if you’re there can you give me some advice!

@guapb89 - i’m no expert, but to be honest i think that if you submit anything below a 600 it could possibly hurt you rather than help you, unless your first language is not english (in which case a 570 reading comprehension score is definitely forgivable). also, i am certain that the admissions office will take into account that you attend the top business school in your country. it’s common practice in admissions to consider an applicant’s grades in the context of the difficulty of their school’s curriculum. also, i’m super jealous that you are fluent in 2 languages and proficient in 1.

thank you sweetestthing! My first language is not english and maybe a 570 could be forgivable with the ibt 108 which is supposed to be good. hmmm I don’t know what to do though, I don’t know how important is the fact of not submitting SATs…even if they are low, just to give them a clue of how I would perform in an american school. I first trusted the fact that they waived it for me…but now sometimes I think its one missing element that could hurt me. Also, I’m from south america so I don’t know what’s their perception of colleges here.

Any more advice??

your application already stands out because you are a student from south africa and you speak several languages and attend the top business school in your country. keep in mind that test scores have less relevance for transfer students, especially because you’ve been out of high school for 3 years. i wouldn’t bother sending them if i were you because they aren’t exceptional (700+), so they won’t be any sort of “final kick” to really impress the admissions office. because you got a waiver, i don’t think they’d be a deciding factor in your favor unless they were really good.

I doubt your application will stand out that much because of your school. Still, it doesn’t hurt to try and I wish you the best of luck. Georgetown is an amazing school, my dream really.

ANYways, has ANYbody heard ANYthing? I am going crazy waiting for the June 15th deposit deadline!!!

hookedongtown, they’ve said that all letters will be mailed out on monday, so everyone will hear by mid to late next week. It seems awfully like these are (mostly) the rejections that go out at the end of the month and they’ve notified (most of) the accepted applicants via e-mail. But we just don’t know. if we could only know how many people were accepted so far, that would definitely clear things up. but if that’s not the case and a large portion of acceptances are also sent out on Monday, it will definitely be an aberration

Got into Georgetown, the college. Biology major. Requested an early decision since I have turned in deposits for other schools.

castiel arent you going to cornell?

Waiting on financial aid from GU. cornell expects me to pay twice my EFC for some wonderful reason.

haha yikes, well good luck, hopefully i get in to gu

thanks haha

I have had a huge financial aid battle with Cornell and its a mess. I talked to my parents though and just a few days ago we found out we might be able to afford it if they take some loans. I thought ivies had good FA >:(

haha if GU gives me less or the same (which is probably very likely) I will opt out, leaving a spot open to one of you waitlistees.

and athletics i saw you on the brown thread, did u get in?

no, i wasnt too bummed tho. cornell was one of my top and i was bummed about that one. im still fine tho since i got into wustl, tufts, vandy, and nyu… just waiting on gu

did you get in??

haha didn’t apply to Brown. I was just bored and perused other forums for fun haha

nice job, those are some good schools. whats your top choice?

haha i got into vandy too (wonderful aid) and transfered out of nyu

i didnt apply for aid there, but i doubt i would get any… my top choice is prob gtwon, but if i dont go there i am debating between washu and tufts which is gonna be really hard… have some suggestions?

Waitlisted…

I called the admissions office, and told them I had to put a deposit down by June 1st. They gave me an admissions officer’s email address and told me to ask her.

She responded with the news almost immediatly. “Offered” a spot on the waitlist.

But if you’re accepted and not going, please let them know!

oh dang no aid? thats intense. FA is the worst sometimes. Ha well suggestions?

I would 100% pick washu. Its a very very good school. I am a pre-med though and it has some strong programs haha. Whats your major? what do you want to be when you grow up? Do you want to go to grad school? knowing these answers i can help you a bit better.

pol sci is my major but i want to do business as well… i dont know exactly what i wanna be, but either a lawey in a field of business and maybe a politician, or a financial planner and maybe starting my own business… i am pretty torn when it comes to my future.

Well, you can’t go wrong with either of those schools, so it might ultimately come down to where you want to live - Boston or St. Louis. Boston has a lot going on, but is cold. St. Louis has fewer college kids around, but also seemed like a pretty nice place in my very limited time there. Congrats on getting into some great schools, and good luck with Georgetown!

Thank you! This is such a difficult decision haha I just want to hear from Gtown!
