Georgetown Transfer Questions

Like michaelungerrr said, it’s just common sense.

You’ll probably need above a 3.5.
Since your high school record is very weak for Georgetown, even if you had an excellent GPA you would have a very slim chance because they’ll only have one semester of grades to look at. Your best bet is to keep your grades up and try to transfer in as a junior.
And no, transferring to another school first will definitely not help.

Let me put it this way. If you transfer to another school as a sophomore, and then try to transfer to Georgetown as a junior, they’ll peg you as a “professional applicant” who just likes applying. You don’t want that label.

Hey, I am thinking about transfering and I was wondering if anyone could tell me if it would be worth it for me to apply to Georgetown College in Econ, Gov or Political Economy.

Sophomore applying for Fall 11
GPA: 3.96 right now. Hopefully 3.9-4.0 by the end of this semester
HS GPA: 93 or 94 can not remember
SAT: 1280/1600 do not remember writing but it was around 600.
Lots of ECCs in high school, Winner of national business competition
Lot of ECs in College. In the Honors program at a pretty good public University. Officer of International Relations Club, in Model UN, participate in running honors college events etc.

Alright, well Georgetown is my dream school I think thats pretty standard for people on this thread. Now I actually want to transfer to Georgetown.

I am a non-traditional student. I am 26 years old and a sophomore at my Tier 2 university. Growing up my mom and dad were in jail and my family who raised me were addicted to drugs, couldn’t hold down jobs and we were often poor. No one ever inspired me or encouraged me to do well. I was just kind of pushed through the system and did well enough. Being as I didn’t care about school growing up, I did barely enough to graduate. In fact, my senior year, I almost didn’t graduate from highschool because I skipped so many classes. I had straight F’s in this particular class and when I found out I needed it to pass… I worked out a deal with my teacher that if I could get an A on the final, she’d let me pass the class. well… I got an A on the final… high score of the class. I applied to college at graduation and based on my SAT and extra curricular (I was very involved) I got into my current university. At the time, it was a tier 4. I was going to college only because its what everyone else did. I took a class here and there, I was a business major because it seemed to be the thing to be. Often, I would enroll in classes and have to drop out because I had to work (my family was really poor) or on one occasion because my house burned down due to a domestic dispute between my aunt and her abusive boyfriend. But I never really gave up on school.

since then, about two years ago I became really motivated. I began to take classes again. I realized I wanted to be a double major in Psychology/Political Science since it was really my passion and I really want to go to law school one day. I got a good GPA and was even accepted into my school’s Honors college (my school has 40,000 students, and 1000 Honors College students… so its selective.) This semester, I am taking six classes and am slated to have straight A’s.

some may argue that I had a high GPA because I only took a class or two at a time. some could look at my record and see all the DRs and how many times I was withdrawn from school because I didn’t take any classes. they could look at my highschool transcripts and wonder with what audacity I would even apply at Georgetown?

I think based on this year, one would be able to see that I can excel at the university level taking a heavy course load. (I still work 35 hrs.) I am in the Honors College and have a 3.5 gpa. do you think I could get into Georgetown? I can prove the Jail thing and the fire… though I cant prove that my family was into drugs or how destitute we were.

Hello,
I’m currently a freshman considering applying for Fall 2011. For the Professor’s report, does it have to be a college professor or is it alright if I ask a teacher from my high school. I’ve only had one semester of classes so far and they’re all lecture classes so I usually interact with the TAs rather than the professors. I don’t think I can get a good report from my professor so I wanted to ask a high school teacher but is this accepted?

I have the same question as Lx3 and from people who have successfully transferred to MSB what GPA was needed I did well in high school and should get around a 3.6 in college, while taking 18 credits.

They are going to want a college professor, you have to show them that you can make good impressions your professors even though it can be difficult depending on class size. You still have some time to make good impressions. I do not know what GPA they want because i got a 3.8 first semester taking 15 hours and then a 4.0 second taking 16 hours and i had good ECs but my SAT scores sucked the big one. So i really don’t think georgetown has set GPA cutoffs, it depends on a lot more. I am applying again this year and will hopefully be getting another 4.0 taking 16 hours to give me a cumulative 3.94, ill be able to get it. Maybe ill see you there haha

I’m just finishing up my first semester at a community college. I’d like to take part in a semester long Arabic program in morocco. I’d also like to transfer, as soon as I can, Into the The SFS. I’m worried that studying abroad after only one semester might make me look flighty. Is this a legitimate fear? Should I wait another semester? I would Appreciate any insight. I never got a chance to graduate high-school, so I’m really relying on building a competitive college transcript.

Thanks for the answer Clemson1220.

I was wondering what my chances would be for MSB. I’m really worried that I don’t have a shot at all and I really want to transfer into Georgetown. Again I’m a freshman applying for Fall 2011.

College GPA: Anywhere from 3.3-3.6 but I’m guessing it’ll probably be 3.4.
HS UW GPA: 3.7 (roughly, my HS didn’t calculate and this is my estimate)
HS W GPA: 4.5-4.6 (I don’t remember the exact number)
SAT: 2110/2400
ECs in HS: President of FBLA and Japan Club. Japanese Award from Seton Hall. Award for Business Math. Decent volunteer work. and involved in Math clubs and Science clubs. job for 4 years. and that’s all I can think of now.
ECs in College: I’m planning on interning in the winter for a month.
I know my GPA is on the low side right now but I was hoping that the fact that I’m coming from NYU Stern might help. What do you think my chances would be? Thank you so much to anyone who answers!

Hi! So, I’m halfway through my second year at Loyola Marymount University (Jesuit, in Los Angeles). The campus is beautiful, but I’m not happy here overall. LMU has been great to me, and I love the Jesuit/small student body environment, but I’m not feeling challenged… and I’m strongly considering transferring.

If I were to transfer, I would want it to be into another Jesuit University (because I really do enjoy the values and mission), and after much consideration, Georgetown is where I see myself if not at LMU. So here’s some background on me and I’d really appreciate it if you could give me some feedback on what you think my chances are of getting in?

After my freshman year, I currently have a 3.91 GPA. I’m in the University Honors Program, have been an editor of the University’s newspaper, been published in an academic journal (and helped edit it), have worked for the Honors Program as a Student Associate, and I feel I could get some pretty strong recommendations from professors who I have had class with both in and out of my major department. I’m also in a sorority and was VP of Programming for Greek Council and am currently Director of E-Comm for my chapter. I also have a good background of community service and worked with a non-profit over this past summer.

After this semester, I’m not sure what my GPA will be, but in light of personal stresses and dissatisfaction I was met with this semester, I did not perform as well as I did last (I’m anticipating a 3.6 or 3.7 for this semester, which would leave my cumulative GPA around a 3.75-3.8 depending on where I end up). My major GPA is right now a 4.0, but after this semester will probably be around a solid 3.8/3.85 I also have a few W’s on my transcript (they can be explained of course, but how much will this affect my chances?)… I’m also on basically full financial aid to LMU, and my worry would be that Georgetown might not give me enough aid to attend, even if I am accepted. (Can anyone tell me how they are with aid? Thanks!)

I’m an English major and plan on sticking with that. Writing is my passion and I would be able to submit a good portfolio of my work to Georgetown if that’s an option. I’m also confident I could submit a great essay and do a great interview. (Do they interview for transfers?)

High school stats are as follows:
3.8 GPA unweighted, 4.6 weighted / 2020 SAT (740 reading, 720 writing, and 560 math) math is clearly not my strong suit, but I feel that’s all right considering I’m an English major? I took two subject tests also both scoring in the mid-600s. I was also heavily involved in high school with extracurriculars.

Since I wouldn’t matriculate at Georgetown (if I am accepted) until fall semester of 2011, would my spring semester at LMU factor into the decision? I’m hoping to pull a 4.0 next semester, as I’m taking basically all major classes and those are very strong for me.

Thanks for the help/sorry for the ridiculously long post… just trying to be thorough!
Any feedback would be appreciated!

If anyone could transfer chance me it would be greatly appreciated. This is my second time applying to Georgetown, with this time around being a junior transfer.

HS Stats:
3.75 GPA, (1280/1880 SAT’s), 3 Varsity Sports, 150 Community Service Hours, Member of 2 Clubs

College:
3.85 GPA in my school’s Honor’s Program, Intramural Sports, Member of 3 Clubs, and a few recommendations from Professors. In addition, I volunteer at Habitat for Humanity and am participating in Model UN

HS stats:
*3.9 GPA
*Honors Society / Honors Program
*~150 community service hours
*~30 hours tutoring
*plenty of extracurriculars including community service clubs, poetry clubs, writing clubs…
*1720/2400 SAT

College stats:
*3.6 GPA
*Dean’s List
*Summer internship in Yale
*current sophomore
*current bio / premed major
(applying for a bio major)

So what do you think? any help and suggestions are greatly appreciated.

ALSO i have a question: I know most universities consider a visit to the campus a plus, do you think a visit to Georgetown would be necessary or a plus in my application?

Nspeds and anyone else willing to offer some insight:

I’d like to know my chances for being accepted to SFS. Thanks in advance for any advice or input, I really appreciate it.

Thanks!

peterc,

I’m applying to the College this semester so take what I say with a grain of salt. You’re College Stats are very impressive (did you take the SAT’s?). If you could explain away your low high school GPA in your essays, I think you have a fair shot. Again I couldn’t tell you for sure. I was rejected last year with a 3.85 from a top 25 school lol

Thanks, newtransfer. Yeah I’m happy to show a 4.0, I probably should’ve qualified that though, it’s from a community college. I’m sure they consider that when evaluating the big picture.

I didn’t take the SATs, but I don’t even think they would want to know the results given the time it’s been.

As for explaining away the low GPA, I’m going to do my best. No tragic circumstance or anything, just a bit of depression and general apathy. I’m hoping my record in the years since will mean more than that. I intend to devote much more of my essay space to the point where I turned things around and the years since then, rather than explaining or excusing the poor part of my record. Does that seem like a good idea?

Also, I have some bad marks on the first stint of college, when I was about 20. A few withdrawals and incompletes and one F, in a class that I have since retaken with an A.

Wonder if any of that changes the “fair shot” assessment?

Again, thanks for the reply. And best of luck to you if you decide to reapply. Hearing that you were rejected with those stats is a bit discouraging…

I qualify under the SAT exception as well but I’m going to take the test in 2 weeks. I figure, if I can put up a great score it can only help my case.

People tell me that I shouldn’t bother with the test but personally, I don’t think a high GPA(mine is 3.9) from a CC is sufficient enough for admission, especially with little or poor HS records to go with. If I’m going to be fighting with other students for the 200 or so spots they have for transfers, I might as well leave no stone unturned. Just MO.

CG, that’s probably a good point. I think it might be a little late for that in my case, since I haven’t prepared and would really have to cram with classes starting soon and work as busy as it is. I’m sure that a good score could really help your chances though.

Are you applying to SFS?

I’ve browsed the relevant threads a bit, and I think you’re right. High gpa is certainly no guarantee. There are some extremely qualified people that haven’t been accepted yet. I’m hoping that my essays, ECs, letters will make the difference. Good luck.

peterc,

That’s what I meant by explaining away your low high school grades lol. It is a very good idea to talk about your reformation and newfound commitment to school, etc…I’m not sure about SFS, but for the college if you are five years removed from high school SAT’s are irrelevant, so you shouldn’t have to worry about that.

CGCG,
Are you a freshman applying for sophmore transfer? If so, then I would recommend the SAT’s if you can pull exceptional scores on them. The average transfer GPA is 3.7 I believe.

Peterc, I am applying to the College. I get the sense from GUs transfer page that they value high school stats / standardized scores pretty high.

Newtransfer, with 45 credits I’ll be applying for Junior standing.
