Georgetown University - Some Questions

  1. Is Early action really more competitive than regular decision? Is it still worth doing it if so? Check my previous posts for my stats if you want
  2. Does Georgetown even look at the writing section score of the SAT ? Right now I have a 2270 but only a 700 in CR but a 790 in math and 780 in writing, so 1490/1600 isn’t quite as high.
  3. I’m interested in majoring in biology, but not sure if I would want to go the pre-med route or not. Does declaring you are pre-med make it more competitive when applying to georgetown?
Thanks so much for any input

About early applications, maybe repost here? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/georgetown-university/

For #3, everybody and their little brother thinks they’re pre-med. This doesn’t make you unique at all. Plus there’s no place to say “I’m pre-med” unless you actively choose it in your personal statements. Good luck.

The acceptance rate for EA is A LOT lower than RD. The only perk is that you can’t get rejected when you apply EA. From what I’ve researched only the TOP students get in EA. I’m applying EA myself in the fall, all it can do is show admissions officers that you reallywanna go to that school!

@theknova that’s very odd right? this is the only school where I have heard of EA being more competitive than RD. Worst that could happen is deferral right? I’m probably gonna go for it if I really like the school when I visit this weekend!

@T26E4 I didn’t ask if declaring pre-med makes me unique or improve my chances sorry if I worded my question poorly … I meant does declaring pre-med make it more competitive/ harder to get into because as you said, everyone thinks they are pre-med…

The main downside to applying EA to Georgetown is if another university that you are interested in has SCEA.

Declaring any major doesn’t make it any easier or harder for Georgetown. As noted above, the only place to reference it is in your essays, and the specific major won’t be the point: what your essay says about you is what will matter. Having said that, if you are seriously thinking about med school, the usual advice around CC is to choose a college where your stats put you in the top 25% of your class. That’s b/c undergrad GPA is huge in getting into med school, and you want to be in a school in which are you are strong relative to your peers, not average or striving to keep up.

Yes very odd! But trust me just go for EA. Even if you don’t get in, you will get your foot in the door.
You will LOVE the Gtown campus. Its gorgeous and very Europe-like. Be sure to explore the shopping areas in Georgetown.

@collegemom3717 thanks for your input. My SAT score (2270) is towards the 75th percentile for Georgetown and my GPA is also a 4.0 so I think my stats look good for being above average for the incoming class. To your point about EA, right now I am thinking of either going UPenn ED, or Early action to schools like Notre Dame and Georgetown where it is not single choice. My fear about Penn is that I’ve heard the pre-med tract there is VERY competitive even cutthroat so I would have to work extremely hard to stand out among my peers and it may be overwhelming. I want to be able to go to a school where I can work hard and do well without absolutely burning myself out with tons of work before med school. Georgetown is no breeze of course, but it might be more well-rounded than some of the other colleges I was considering as reaches

@theknova awesome will do

.

@theknova how do you think your shot is for EA right now? Do you have any tips

Be prepared for a long haul.

in August of 2014, my kid applied.
In December, she was deferred.
In April, she was wait-listed
in June, she was “extended-wait-listed”
In July, she received a turn-down with a hand-written note that said, “you’d be an exceptionally strong transfer candidate next year.”

@SouthernHope wow… hope I’m not in the same boat sorry to hear ! hope your kid likes where she ended up or I hope she successfully transfers

Another question @SouthernHope @theknova @collegemom3717 : Georgetown requires class rank, but my school no longer ranks. How does this work out?

To your class rank question: mine doesn’t do class rank either. Same for many students who get in. Doesn’t rlly matter they just look at the grades you get on your transcript

As for me: I’m one of those students who are on the cusp. My GPA is a 4.08 W out of 5 (due to a crap soph. year). Act score is a 30 but I’m retaking it in a week (I’ve done a lot of studying for months so I hope it goes up). The only things that makes me stand out are my EC’s, background, and hopefully Recs. So ultimately I def don’t think I’m getting in EA. Hopefully RD though

but hey, you never know with Georgetown. :expressionless:

My son was accepted EA. He had an almost perfect transcript, good test scores and pretty good leadership/ECs. I think it was his essays and teacher/GC recommendations that put him over the top, however. “Cura Personalis” is a big deal at Georgetown. So be sure that you show them who you are as a person – a whole person.

We were just on campus for the NSO and it really is a very special place. Best of luck to you!

@theknova how do you think my stats are for EA- I have 2270 sat but only 1490 (700CR790Math) and my weighted cum gpa is 4.89. The thing I fear is that many people applying EA have similar scores I think my GPA is good tho. I know two people that were both deferred EA but got in RD, so I hope worst case scenario you and me could get in like them!

@gradygrad that’s good to know I hoped so. I feared that georgetown cared more about academics than all else because I read like 50% of their class was ranked 1,2, or 3 in their class. This seems to suggest academics was the most important factor BY FAR.
