Hi,
I am a freshman transfer student who got into and is now deciding between Georgetown and Brown as a pre-med. At Gtown, I would major in bio of global health. At brown, I would probably concentrate in pub health or cog sci. For georgetown, I would be an incoming sophomore who has already finished 7/14 required core classes.
Is either school clearly better for pre-med? (Which would have better research opportunities, which has better med-school matriculation #s, which students perform better on mcat, which school allows for stronger relationship w/ teachers, how collaborative is the school, how does grade inflation/deflation come into play at both schools, etc.)
If anyone has any thoughts they can share I’d really appreciate it.
Are both affordable ?
money would be about the same for both… brown is a little more expensive but not by much
The American Association of Medical Colleges provides some really good data on medschool applicants by school and your schools are on the list. https://www.aamc.org/data-reports/students-residents/interactive-data/2020-facts-applicants-and-matriculants-data
I hope that link helps you sort through some of your questions and if I recall as recently as 2018 Brown had a medschool acceptance rate of 85%? Most of my friends are either engineers, scientists, med-adjacent fields or physicians (just happened that way cause of the school I went to) so I know doctors who went to both Brown and Georgetown. Based on what I’ve heard them say, I’d choose Georgetown but only you can know what uniquely will work for you!
They are comparable schools. Both have hospitals and medical schools associated with them. I’d choose the one that is the better fit for you.
Wash DC is a fairly formal city. Housing is expensive if you live off campus.
Brown has an open curriculum & is known for generous grading policies.
Two great options !
Would you not be a sophomore at Brown?
i would be a sophomore at brown and georgetown for the fall of 2021
This site suggests Brown could make a good choice for your goals:
Funny they don’t seem to outline the actual factors in their ranking. The general categories seem very broad and could easily encompass Brown and Georgetown: urban, mid sized (I wouldn’t call them small), US schools, (as well as many other schools beyond the enumeraged list).
As a sample size of one: my nephew attended Bates (#4 on the list) didn’t get into med school right out of school in the first round, decided to pursue a masters at Tufts that led to entrance into their med school.
Might be worth investigating the pre med advising at Brown and Georgetown. They both have medical schools so I’d hope the advising would be very good at both.
Based simply on the reported experiences & very successful results of former pre-med students, I recommend Brown University over Georgetown. But, this is based on the experiences of a very limited number of students.
There is no wrong choice in your situation–just very different environments.
