Georgia Tech Alumni

Hello,

I’m a GT Alumni in ISYE. I just graduated last year, I’ll be happy to answer any questions pertaining to GT.

Good Luck

Drew

Hey!
Just wondering, can one stay in campus over Winter break at no additional cost?

For the dorms yes, you can even stay there over christmass if you want

Hi. Do you personally know anyone who has done the 5 year co-op program? If so, how did they like it? and did they think it was well worth the extra year?

It is worth it. I personally did the UPI( Undergrad professional Internship). I worked for Intel in New Mexico for 8 months and then the next year worked with Intel again but this time in Arizona, then as a manager for them my last year in ATL. So I graduated in 5 years but it was toatally worth it. The more work experience you have the more you will stand out to employers after you graduate. Some kids had no job experience when they graduated and it was really tough for them getting jobs.

You worked for Intel?! That is so sweet. What did you major in? And what all did you do for the internships with Intel? Did you enjoy it?

I majored in Industrial and Systems Engineering. The first internship in new mexico wasn’t that much fun, I did alot of reporting and statiscal analysis. The semi-conductor facility was really awesome though and getting to go inside the clean rooms and watch the wafer production process was pretty cool. The second was more my style, the plant intel has in Arizona is a research and development manaufactuing plant so I got to develop simulation models for their new tool sets. Overall I didn’t like the 9-5 gig though so I decided to become a management consultant and thats what I’m doing right now.

Wow, thanks for the insight. I am very seriously considering computer engineering, so I imagine an internship for me at Intel would be of a different nature (work wise). However, I am certain now that I want to do UPI or co-op. Thanks once again.

no problem, good luck at Tech!

Do you know anyone that majored in Biomedical Engineering there? I remember talking to someone that was majoring in BME but then switched to industrial because the program was just getting started and wasn’t very strong with the classes. Now, it is ranked #2 and there is a more solid curriculum, etc.

If you do know someone that majored in BME, what kind of co-ops were available for them, and what job opportunities did they get after school? Thanks.

[BME: The Wallace H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering](http://www.acad.bme.gatech.edu/career/opportunities.php)

That should help you out a bit. Navigate the pages for more info. Your advisor would be your main contact though for the best information. Also GT hosts several carrier fairs during the school year in which major companies come to recruit students for jobs/ internships. Overall I’m not very familiar with the program since it is new. I do believe it’s very highly ranked, 3rd for undergrad studies and 2nd for graduate school. Also I believe you can take classes at Emory as well for a dual major. Hope this helps

Yeah, you are right about the rankings. I had them mixed up. That’s probably one of the best sites I have seen for a major out of any school. There is a lot of info on there. Thanks for the links.

No problem, good luck at Tech!

Can you tell me which side of campus is more ‘active’? Which side is less noisier? I got glenn, and I have no idea how it is…

And btw, for my first year classes, (BME major) which do you suggest, chem or bio?

How does this schedule look for my first semester? Majoring in BME.

Math 1501 Calculus
Chem 1310
ENGL 1101
WELLNESS
Intro to Biomedical Engineering BMED 1000

^ That looks like a good schedule.

Hello,

To answer Tom I lived on the East campus and was pretty quiet, I believe the West Campus housing to be more nosier since its closer to major roads which are always filled with traffic. As far as what class to take Bio might be a little easier than Chem, but you didn’t hear that from me.

Feez, I see your taking 15 credits. I would wait till your second semester to do that until you feel comfortable with the workload at GT. I would take BMED on your second semester with other classes.

How does everything pan out with the guy to girl ratio as it is? Does it bother the majority of the students there?

Well theres more guys than girls. Personally it didn’t really bother me, I just went out to the clubs in ATL all the time with my friends and there’s plenty of girls there, plus emory throws very good parties, Tech not so much, unless you live in a frat or sorority. The best girls unfortunetly are in UGA but they come down to ATL all the time, my x was from UGA ( I always hated UGA though!! hahah)

Hah, well I’m a girl so I guess getting girls wouldn’t really be the big problem for me. I guess I just wanted to make sure that the guys didn’t whine too much about it, because that would annoy me. But if the majority are like you, then it should be fine. But, UGA? How dare you? Haha
