GPA?

@clearsky1 the only thing I see that might be a little concerning is the uw gpa. I think a 92 translates to 3.7 which is on the low end of admitted students for GT. The fact that you are in state along with your course rigor, advanced math, and high test scores should help. Does your ECs show some dedication to an activity like a sport, music, or theater?

@racereer I disagree. I think 35 ACT and 10 APs is definitely enough to get into GT. A 92 uw GPA is actually extremely good considering the course load is all APs! Net I think clearsky1 does not have anything to worry about - if those stats don’t get an offer at GT then there is no hope for anyone else!

@stepl100 there have been people with even better stats that were not admitted, though they are usually from OOS. Since they are in state, I do think they have a better chance than not of acceptance. GT puts higher importance to GPA than test scores. Since the 2019 CDS out yet, in 2018 94% of accepted students had a 3.75 or better GPA. So I am not wrong in saying a 3.7uw is on the lower end for admitted students.

Having a pretty solid familiarity with GT admissions, I think I can comfortably say that no applicant to GT has “nothing to worry about.” Quite the contrary. I know of a good number whose stats (GPA and ACT/SAT, number of AP courses) exceeded those of the OP, and were rejected. Granted, all of the ones I know of are out of state, which lowers the chances of admission at GT considerably. The surest thing the poster has going for him/her is in-state status. This is a tremendous advantage for GT and it might just be enough to get in with the reported stats. Were this an out-of-stater, I would say the chances are slim to none with a 92 average. Also, 10 APs are good but not great, as many students have more.

Prior to junior year, I had a 4.0/4.6 GPA and am applying with 19 AP/IB classes. However, this year I have As except for a high C in history for various reasons. If this is submitted in the mid-year report, could it significantly hurt my chances of getting into tech? I am applying for ME by the way.

Does anyone know if girls have a better chance of getting in than guys? Since Tech’s gender distribution is a bit skewed (62-38) are they actively trying to equalize that or not?

@fruitarian The 2018 data (IPEDS) for GT showed that 28% of females (11,163 female applicants) were accepted while 19% of males (24,481 male applicants) were accepted. So I would say that females have a better chance at getting admitted.

But being in-state is the biggest factor as the in-state students acceptance rate has basically been double that of out of state students.

@xyyez3 did you apply EA? If so they will only see your mid term grades if you get deferred. Even so, I don’t think one C one semester in a history class (and all As otherwise) will be the deciding factor in your admission.

Thank you, and yes I did apply EA. Good luck to all that applied!

My son was admitted in state with similar stats. Same ACT and SATIIs. Private school so fewer APs but GPA higher (valedictorian x lowest grade was 93). We were fairly confident of his chances but honestly Georgia Tech is not a safety for anyone. He is there, happy and thriving and grades for his first semester were awesome so I would say he is in the right place! The only thing that may raise a flag is your C in math at Georgia Tech. Not sure whether that would count against you or not.

To clarify, it’s 14 AP Courses and 4 Dual Enrollment Courses

My son’s portal says: “Please note: First-year applicants may not change their major.”

well we are 18 days away and the stress just piles up

@PuppyM I remember my son’s portal saying the same thing last year when he applied, but after acceptance in the summer he received an email and portal link asking him to confirm his major choice and allowing him to change to any major. The only restriction was for music technology which requires an audition. My understanding is they have done this at least the past 2 years. Even if they don’t offer that option this year they have a very easy major change policy. Your first major change is again unrestricted on major and can be done as soon as end of first semester.

@racereer Thanks. I noticed that language in his portal about not changing majors a few days ago. I don’t recall seeing it earlier.

Hello folks, we’re nearing the decision release date. I just wanted to bump the thread in case anyone wanted to post a chance-me or discuss some last-minute stuff.
Feel free to discuss anything GaTech related.

Have a good day y’all.

Does anyone get rejected from Georgia Tech even after taking Distance Math and scoring above the median? If yes, what are the criteria for rejection?
