That’s speculation from a handful of (probably upset) applicants from 2014. There are other GT threads with comments by recipients of the Provost Scholarship who identify as being not URM.
It has some truth in it though I think. It will be interesting to see if any Provost recipient also is Stamps semi-finalist. I will be convinced it is purely merit based if some of them are also Stamps semi-finalist.
@hbzheng If it had some truth it would have some evidence. But there is no evidence. Other than the comments in GT threads here on CC from recipients of the Provost Scholarship who were NOT URMs. And, also, the Provost web page itself, which says a lot, but says nothing about URMs. In this day and age when schools fall all over themselves announcing their outreaches to URMs, it is inconceivable GT would have such a huge scholarship for URMs and keep it a secret.
Also, you are wrong to imply the Stamps Scholarship is “purely merit” and the Provost is not. Neither are purely merit. The Stamps web pages says “recipients are selected based upon HOLISTIC excellence and potential within the program’s four pillars: Scholarship, Leadership, Progress, and Service.” This HOLISTIC approach is how a 2024 REA GT admittee was selected for the Stamps competition with an SAT score in the low 1400s.
Hey so I was deferred from Georgia Tech, I am OOS have a 35 superscore ACT, 1500 superscore SAT applied to college of engineering. I have pretty good ECs and and have a lot of leadership positions. The main reason I think why I got deferred was because of my GPA which is a 3.741 unweighted and 4.277 weighted. I have been taking a lot of online classes because im from a pretty small school in rural Michigan, so I have taken classes which is not even offered by my school. I was just hoping someone could help explain to me what I should write about in my Deferred Supplemental Form, also take into account that my grades this past semester have not really been as good as they have in the past. If anyone could help me it would be very appreciated since Georgia Tech is my top choice to attend college at.
@yash07gautam Sorry to hear you were deferred. At least you’re still in the hunt. Your 35 ACT is above GT’s 75th percentile and your SAT 1500 is just under GT’s 75th percentile. Your GPA is good. Hard to make sense of these holistic admissions. I suspect the EA pool of applicants has higher test scores than the RD pool of applicants. If so, you should stand out at RD.
That said, does the Deferred Supplemental Form contain any guidelines or specific questions? I know from friends’ experiences that appeals from rejections require new information, new changes is circumstances, etc., that are not already in your application. In other words, don’t re-argue your application. Your ACT percentile for GT is higher than your SAT percentile for GT - perhaps take another ACT and submit it?
@yash07gautam your test scores are fine. Your gpa is just below 94% of enrolled first year students. The best thing would have been to show an improvement in your GPA, but it sounds like that is not happening. For the DSF, report about any major accomplishments that may have happened since your applications was submitted (awards, new leadership position, lead in the school theater production, research update, etc.). Then take a good look at the school moto and mission and tell GT how you would be able to help them fulfil those.
@racereer Thanks for the insight, I do have a question though so the reason my grades this past semester are lower than my normal range is really because of a couple health concerns I had as well as some family issues that were going on. I am wondering if I should mention this and how would you say I should go about writing it?
Hey, does anyone know what exactly they are looking for in the Deferred Supplemental Form? Is it just a list of things you didn’t include in the original application, or an actual letter? Thank you!
@yash07gautam it would be much better if your GC could address any issues that you had this past semester that affected your grades. They could possibly address it when they forward your transcripts.
I may have missed it in the thread, but does anyone have the stats on In-State deferred EA students getting accepted in the RD round? Just trying to get feedback/ understanding of DS’s potential chance?
@WDE1994 the only stats on EA getting accepted during RD comes from GT where they give an overall average rate of 24%. I would guess that if that is the combined rate then in-state would average over 40% just based on the regular overall acceptance rates.
Hey I was wondering what effect would it have if I sent in my Deferred Supplemental Form but didn’t send in my updated grades for this past semester? If anyone has any insight on what effect this will have on my admission chances that would be super helpful!
The 24% EA deferral rate is the average over 5 years (and GT’s website doesn’t actually specify which years). Over the last five years, total acceptance rate has dropped from 32% in 2015 to 16.6% in 2019…point being, I don’t think this year’s EA deferral acceptance rate is likely to be close to 24%.
Deferred Supplemental Form says its due “by Feb 1st.” Does that mean Jan 31st 11.59PM or Feb 1st 11.59PM. Generally deadlines are 11.59PM on the due date but got confused by the term “by.” any idea?
(son has a local competition tomorrow, results of which will be known in the evening - wondering if its worth waiting till the end of that).
I don’t read “by” as “before”. I take it to mean on or before Feb 1, that is, by 11:59 tonight.
Maybe best not to chance it.
Always true. But if he did not get it in yesterday 1-31 his best bet is today 2-1. LOL.
Thanks - he submitted it yesterday (didn’t want to take a chance). Today’s competition is not a major one and he decided its better to get the form out of the way.
good. he can maybe submit a supplement later with the award.
