Georgia Tech class of 2024 waitlist thread

It would be interesting to see what is going on with GAP year statistics.
It is possible that some accepted OOS students are taking GAP year to address finances in this economy. That my open some spots for wailisted students.

Any one got off the wait list today ? New updates?

I would like to mention that they don’t tell you the major because you can confirm any major when you pay the deposit. You are admitted to Georgia Tech, not to a major.

I actually didn’t write a letter of continued interest and on my Waitlist update, there was nothing I could’ve added. I don’t think there was a huge difference. IIRC, I believe that there is nothing you can send in, they will only look at your current application. You can check on their website but if you really want to get in I’d say try anything.

I do not think that would look good. My DC portal specifically said not to send anything new or any emails. I do not think your interest does anything at this point.
If I understand correctly (may be not) they are now trying to balance OOS (for revenue) by major and by State. This is public school, so they need to look politically correct.
Given that waitlist is not ranked, they probably are trying to make sure that they are balancing for each state and each major representation. So when student is fished from waitlist pull they are fished by major, by state, by race, by gender, by watever they need to balance at that point for their statistics. I can bet it is not random selection from waitlist and not based on your interest emails.

I am not sure that you can suddenly change major for your application.
(Apply for Math and commit for CS for example.)
Here is info from GaTech website:
Admitted Freshmen
Admitted freshmen will not be allowed to submit a request for a change of major until after the deadline for withdrawal from classes with a W grade in the first term of their enrollment. The change would be effective for the second term of enrollment. This includes a change of major within the student’s current College. For freshmen admitted for Summer, the restriction is lifted after the withdraw deadline of their second semester of enrollment. All other restrictions also apply.

my kid also got off the waitlist, but how do we know which major? the letter doesn’t say. In the common app, he selected 1st and 2nd choices.

You absolutely are admitted to a major. They pull students off the waitlist based on institutional priorities and fill according to the major to which the student applied. I have children there now and have visited many times. They are very clear about this.

When today?> which major? OOS?

Congrats to everyone who got accepted already! They are going to continue accepting students even after May 1 right? I’m getting a little nervous seeing everyone getting results, but I’m still on the waitlist (and want nothing more than to be accepted! )

around lunch time, didn’t say major, yes oos

DD also was accepted yesterday. She only applied CS major. Was ready to go to UIUC. Now she’s torn between these two great schools. Any one can offer any pros and cons? The cost is not an issue as both OOS. One thing I noticed is GT has a much smaller grad school than UIUC. But the undergraduate population is much bigger especially in CS. Not sure about class size, etc.

CS in GT is in a dedicated college. I think even grad student body size is bigger than UIUC. class size is fine as GT CS has enough faculty size to hold the class

For the past few years everyone has been accepted to their first choice major. If you log into buzzport and go to oscar there should be an admission tab. Under that tab there should be application status. Your major will be listed there.

@momsearcheng while that has been on their web page the past few years they have also allowed incoming first years to change major before enrolling for class the past 2 years. Now there is no guarantee they will do it again this year though. Last year they could change to any major they wanted, no restrictions except music technology which requires an audition.

@sportydad there is thread that is currently discussing GT vs UIUC for CS here:
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/georgia-institute-technology/2179803-gt-computer-science-vs-uiuc-computer-science-for-oos.html

Though not for CS, my son chose GT over UIUC both OOS.

@stuff0909 I know how you feel. I have similar stats and I got waitlisted.

Any one got off the wait list today ? New updates?

@sportydad This is something that I saw on another website:

Someone was making the same decision and is leaning towards Georgia Tech over UIUC. The reasons are that Georgia Tech:

  • has more awarded CS faculty (on the basis of ACM fellows, IEEE fellows, and NSF Career Award Winners)
  • is, overall, more prestigious/selective with a bigger brand value
  • has a highly intellectual student body, with a more academic environment
  • has a coop program with top companies
  • has larger and more frequent career fairs
  • has a higher undergraduate EECS ranking
  • accepts AP credits as well: http://www.catalog.gatech.edu/academics/undergraduate/credit-tests-scores/advanced-placement-exams/ -> which you can build toward a combined BS/MS program

There has been more recruiting from GT to top companies between 2010 - 2020 (even though UIUC has had around 30,000 more alumni)

Google: 864 (GT) vs 736 (UIUC)
Amazon: 769 (GT) vs 536 (UIUC)
Microsoft: 738 (GT) vs 504 (UIUC)
Apple: 464 (GT) vs 313 (UIUC)
McKinsey: 148 (GT) vs 66 (UIUC)

The only top company that has recruited more UIUC students than Georgia Tech is Facebook:
355 (GT) vs 378 (UIUC)

The divide in recruiting continues to grow, you can see for yourself by changing the start year from 2010 to 2019. Over the past year, GT has had far more recruiting from top companies than UIUC.

I think using info above to make decision for school is extreme. There are other employers too. Keep in mind that all depend of your child. GaTech is not easy school. If your child can get better GPA or internship (because he/she can stand out) at UIUC (or other school) he can get advantage too. In GaTech majority students are excellent and they all compete. Recruiters try to get students from variety of schools.
Also sometimes (and I witnessed that personally and could not believe my eyes and ears) companies search to fill position with certain category of students. There are easy ways to do it. So they asked career center to provide them resumes of only students that belong to certain societies to make sure that they interview only category that they are interested in.

Unless something drastically changed, most undergraduate classes are taught by current PhD and sometimes even MS students and recitations can be led even by seniors (I did it!). So please do not count on most awarded faculty to teach your child.
In addition, most awarded faculty may be very good researcher and not a good teacher at all (had some like that too.)

Do not take me wrong, I am GaTech alumni and big fan. I just think that people often try to get too much from stats. Please be educated consumer of the advertisment.
