@tenseMom Nothing here. I might be late to the party, just made a profile this morning. My son is still trying to make a decision between U Mich, UIUC and Purdue (engineering). GT was his dream school, and he was deferred EA then waitlisted (the definition of admissions hell!). Will probably end up at Purdue if GT doesn’t come through. Purdue pushed their commitment date to June 1, so we have some time. Best of luck to you, I know how unsettling these times area.
Nothing yet… I’m trying to mentally move on. With so many students on the waitlist, it’s such a long shot. So many qualified students for them to choose from and some have gotten off the waitlist. They waitlisted approximately 1,000 more students than last year. Has anyone seen anything new on their portal? Anything from OSFA?
UIUC is a big old state college and probably has at least a half million more living alumni than GT. The student body is 45000 compared to 21000 for GT. Over just one decade that’s a 250,000 difference.
It would be interesting to see a table of colleges by number of living alumni.
It seems like only OOS applicants have been accepted off of the waitlist. Does anyone think that some in-state applicants will be accepted off of the waitlist?
My guess is that because of covid-19 the early yield numbers are coming lower for OOS and a little higher for in state. So to keep the split of in vs out of state they want, they are taking the oos waitlist students first.
ive seen the exact same thing that they’ve mainly accepted oos students so far off the waitlist. is it even likely they’ll be accepting in-state students within the next few weeks? i mean ofc they accepted a ton of in-state apps from both ea & rd rounds but its far more likely for in-state students to accept & commit than oos so wouldn’t that mean there’s less of a chance of getting off the waitlist for in-state?
idk im j v anxious abt this entire process - hopefully we all make it off the waitlist soon
My understanding that all top public schools (top 100) now have plenty of instate upcoming freshmen due to coronavirus (uncertainty with finance, health environment etc.) OOS have difficulty to commit if finances are strained (have higher tuition). They may also go for GAP year if allowed. Since all state budgets have huge budget holes (coronavirus again) schools cannot expect much funding in nearest future. As a result, most available seats (once required by state laws quotas for number of instate students are met) will be filled with OOS students who are full pay (or mostly full pay) and who pay significantly higher tuition that can be used by schools to close budget gaps. So students who are on waitlists have better chances at their OOS schools than for in-state school.
Looks like no more GaTech waitlist admissions at this point. Probably next wave will be in May. I guess students need to commit to their plan B schools with deposits if deadline is May 1st. This year would be interesting. I hope if foreign students will not be able to make it by fall due to visas mess and coronavirus, schools may go to waitlists as late as July or August. Also all schools will have domino effect, since all schools in this together and many students are on waitlists.
Congratulations! Forgive my ignorance, but did your child get off waitlist at GT and you are from Michigan? Or from Univ of Michigan? What is his/her major?
