Congratulations to all those who got off the waitlist. Did you get an email or a portal update?
Great news to all who were admitted! Sounds like this was the first meaningful pull off of the waitlist. The admissions office has changed hands since last year, so perhaps they are doing things differently. Curious how long people have to respond?
And DramaMama is right – Georgia Tech used to announce how many waitlist offers were made after each pull. They did not do this last year or the year before as far as I know.
If there’s room in Atlanta that is promising that there may still be more offers made. Last year Atlanta was full after the commitment deadline.
The admissions office is “under new management” so things this year may be done a little differently.
Also one other point. When pulling off the waitlist Georgia Tech does consider major so it sounds like there may be room in the CS department, if two offers were for that department. This year they restricted transfer into CS, so perhaps they admitted conservatively to that major as well.
I got an email just now, they said they offered a spot to around 100 people already. Does anyone know how this compares to the first waves of previous years?
I don’t know about numbers for past first waves, but here’s the number of total offers the last three years (source: Georgia Tech CDS):
-2023: 60
-2022: 41
-2021: 276
One of my kids got off waitlist CS. She got an email to join living learning community (LLC). I was told it costs $800/year.
Is it worth it?
Congratulations!!
Totally depends on the kid. It is a good way to meet people, but there are lots of good ways to meet people. Doesn’t add any sort of prestige. The $800 really just covers activities throughout the year from what I understand and not all people actually participate. If you do, though, it’s another good way to find your community.
The one other benefit is the living learning communities are assigned to particular dorms. This gives you control over where you will live, as dorm selection is based on when you pay the housing deposit. This can be a pro or con, depending on what side of campus your child prefers.
Friend’s child was offered spot in CS at Gatech from waitlist 2 days ago. I think he will take it. I believe a student has until Monday to decide.
I thought CS kid will stick to UMD.
No, it is not necessary to spend another x amount of $ at LLC at Gatech. Gatech is very different from UMD. No Honor college is necessary. I consider all Gatech students as Honor students.
Thank you all for the insights. That question came up twice, so I’d like to see other members opinions. Thanks!
@Fashuli (I accidentally replied to @momsearcheng)
I agree that the honor college is not necessary at GT. However, the LLCs are a different consideration IMO because it’s an immediate cohort of students with similar interests. This is assuming there’s still space available in any LLCs of interest, of course.
I know kids who have chosen LLCs and others who have not. The campus location was a main factor… does your student prefer west campus or east campus? Also, how social is your student? Do they plan to participate in Greek life?
Which campus better? My son visited but didn’t mention the two campuses.
She is kinda on the quiet side but always has a group of very close friends. Don’t think she would be interested in sonorities.
It is all one campus and it comes down to personal preference. There is no wrong answer.
The east-side (east campus) is nearer the stadium and Greek houses and Tech Square. It is generally considered the more social side of campus and can be loud on game days and weekends. That may not be the best for kids who need peace and quiet for studying and sleep.
The west-side is the quieter side of campus, with fewer distractions as it’s a bit away from the center of campus. While this is good for kids who prefer a quieter living environment, it’s a longer walk to many social events and classes.
All the LLCs are on west campus, I believe.
I know extremely sociable kids who participated in Greek life, game days, etc. who chose west campus to have that guaranteed downtime.
I know introverted kids who did not attend the big social activities but chose east campus to be around the energy of a more social crowd.
I found an article that may be of interest to your student. I’m sure there are others if you search. Again, congratulations and best wishes!
Do we know when the next wave is likely to be if there will be another wave?
Your assessment of East vs West is correct. Dd always chooses West to stay on quiter side. All fraternity/sorority, loud activities are on east side. Also if your dorm on East next to highway you will hear emergency vehicles all night…
Wow. That’s extremely helpful. Appreciate!
Mine have both been in Towers on East and one next to the freeway on the back, and it’s remarkably quiet in those rooms. Maybe because the walls are concrete? Freeway never bothered him or his roommate and they loved being on East, closer to stuff and with two dining halls right there - Britain and North Avenue.
I would not classify the east campus as loud but more active and social. If they are going to be in Greek life, then east may be preferable because they will be eating meals at their Greek house and it will be closer. Many people think they won’t be in Greek life at Georgia Tech and then end up changing their minds. Greek life will have a spot for anyone who wants to be involved - remember, this is a school full of STEM-y super smart kids and most are engineers or computer scientists. If they want to go Greek they will find their people
has anyone who got off the georgia tech waitlist received their financial aid offer yet? admissions deposits are due monday and i still have no news …
Are you in-state or OOS? If OOS, Tech likely won’t give you any institutional aid, but federal aid including Pell grant and work study (if you qualify), and the first year student loan would be available.
Agree. Almost all out of state students end up paying the full cost. Georgia Tech gives almost no institutional financial aid other than the handful of merit awards offered to those admitted early.
So your cost will be full cost minus pell grant if you qualify.
