Medical school is hard enough to get into as it is (US MD specifically).

Yet it seems most MD accepted students have stellar grades, EC’s, and MCAT scores. So then who exactly makes into top 20 MD schools?

Are all students who get in top MD schools individuals that have something extraordinary about them; are they concert pianists, or athletes? Do they have the most amazing personalities? Did they all cure a disease?

Or was it something simple, like having a very different interest, or possessing a talent that the school found would be a good fit? Was it just pure luck?

I guess my question is that what exactly does it take to get into these top MD schools?

Good grades, MCAT, ECs, research, communication skills, passionate about something they’re involved in, has hobbies outside of school stuff, well rounded. Dont have to be extraordinary. I’m not, and most of my classmates arent either.

If you want to hear what an actual adcomm at Top 20 has to say–go to SDN and read the “Ask LizzyM [almost] Anything 2012 Edition” in the pre-allo forum.

While you’re there–look up and read her thread from last year.

LizzyM is a real and very patient Top 20 med school adcomm who takes questions from pre-meds once a year.

In addition, some SDN members have their stats, ECs, and application data linked on MDApps (the usual caveats about this being the internet, yadda yadda yadda, apply).
