I never heard of the town replacing a mailbox. We finally had the post reinforced with cement and that has kept it from going over. I’m our case it’s the force of the snow that knocks it over - we are at the bottom of a hill on a major road and the road curves just right (or wrong) right where we are. We may have also moved the post a few feet over, I can’t remember now. People around here will sometimes put up wood baffles to protect the box - looks funny until you realize why!
Well, things are returning to normal. Trash pick up was today–and trash got picked up. SIL went grocery shopping and, except for few produce item (avocados), shelves were stocked. UPS delivered packages today.
We haven’t gotten mail the last 2 days so we’ll see if we get postal service today.
However, Home Depot just emailed me that the snow shovels I’d ordered on Sunday are “delayed”–as in they haven’t been shipped yet and may not get shipped for another 5-7 days.
THAT does not make me happy. ![]()
Hopefully schools will be re-open tomorrow.
And the next big storm that will passing along the East Coast stays offshore far enough for any snow to miss us over the weekend.
My husband went out last night to clear a path to the second car and to get to the trash cans. I came out this morning to see this. I have no idea why, but I guess it made him happy?
I attended a lecture on “post WW2 Brutalist architecture and why people hate it” and this photo should have been part of the presentation! Seriously, if this had been rendered in concrete or steel, it would have fit right in!
Glad you have a picture of this insane prison wall of snow!
In my area, the town does not reimburse for mailboxes that get knocked down. Our road crew is actually pretty good. If the snow gets so deep that they can’t actually see your mailbox, they ask you mark it somehow. Folks use flags, old skis etc.
Perhaps he was just stockpiling parts for an igloo.
My daughter started a new job this week; she was substitute teaching and signed a contract last week to be a permanent teacher starting Monday. So far, she’s had 3 snow days!
Her birthday was Sunday and she’d procrastinated all she could before getting a new driver’s license last Friday (living in a new state and had to register her new car before she could get a DL, at least that’s what she understood).
Maybe she should buy a lottery ticket?
There are (county) regulations regarding how far a mailbox should be placed from the road. We had a mailbox munched by the snowplow in our neighborhood, but it was too close to the road to begin with - the homeowner had to move the box farther from the edge of the road when he replaced it. There are also regulations about not blowing the snow from your driveway into the street … but there are unfortunately always a few clowns who don’t seem to understand why they shouldn’t do it (it’s especially annoying when they do it after the plow comes through). In these parts, people don’t have any excuse for poor snow etiquette unless they’re new to the area.
YAY! Grands go back to school tomorrow.
And the Post Office delivered the mail.
I have a whole backyard of undisturbed ice. We could totally build an igloo. Maybe that will be our weekend project since this is never melting…![]()
Our schools are closed the rest of the week. They will be having online learning tomorrow and Friday. The elementary school near my house hasn’t even been plowed yet. Major roads are mostly fine but neighborhood roads vary. We did have mail delivery and trash pickup today.
One thing that makes me incredibly angry are the drivers who don’t clear their cars and then have huge sheets of ice/snow come flying off their cars into the cars driving behind them. Today a police officer driving on the highway in my area was struck by a sheet of ice that came off a vehicle ahead of him. Fortunately he had only minor injuries but this was what his car looked like. 3 Marylanders injured so far from ice flying off cars
When The roads in our neighborhood were repaved, lucky us we were the only ones to get our mailbox knocked off by the equipment. But the city did replace our mailbox, although I think we had to pay for the mailbox, but they reinstalled it and put it in a new post that they broke. At least we got to pick the mailbox we wanted.

That is illegal here in VA.
Frozen in ice here in N. Va. We finally admitted defeat today and hired some help. This is the only equipment that could move it.
Sadly, this headline is still relevant for north Atlanta this weekend! Hope it doesn’t happen, don’t want to be stuck inside again.
Us too! I’ve seen between 4-9 inches for us. It should be all snow at least. I broke down and chipped away at some of our driveway. I’ve been parking on the street since they ploughed. The 23 year old Jeep Liberty H has been driving back and forth up the driveway. Our 5 year old Subaru I wasn’t as crazy about testing its X Mode. Slipping on a steep (albeit not long) driveway is one thing, but it’s between two retaining walls with not much room for error.
But I don’t want to leave it on the street for the next storm if I can help it. I don’t mind getting ploughed in. I don’t want some idiot to crash into it. Someone hit my old car years ago during a snowstorm - on Xmas day! Hit and run. And when we walked the street this past Sunday, it seemed almost every car that went by reeked of weed. Driving high during an ice storm. Brilliant people we have here.
It was a PITA, but I got two skinny tracks pretty well. The back is just a skating rink. That’ll have to melt. Half of the area is only gravel anyway
What a mess!

Metro Atlanta weather forecast keeps changing. The metro area was supposed to be clear, but now the are talking a few inches of snow Saturday. It may change again….
I’m with a couple of others of you, in VA in the DC suburbs. And it’s just weird to me that this weekend I will likely get nothing, while both my boys - one at Clemson in upstate SC and one at WPI, about 50 miles west of Boston, will both likely get snow. And of the two, it seems like the South Carolina kid is the one who may get the greater amount. It’s just… weird.
No snow expected where we live in southern New England…which is good. There is plenty for us to see on the ground!
