My son moved from NYC to the suburbs last year. This winter was the first time he ever had to use a snow blower. Since he was born and raised in California, he needed someone to show him how it worked.
After he cleared the driveway, two teenagers knocked on the door asking if they could shovel the sidewalk and the house entrances. He was happy to hire them.
It’s nice to know there are still teenagers willing to work hard to earn some extra money.
That reminds me. There is a woman here who single handedly started a basketball program for at-risk youth in a tough neighborhood to help keep them off the streets.
I saw an ad today where she has a group of them willing to shovel snow for a “reasonable fee.” I thought that was awesome. I wish the world had a million more people like her
Temperatures reached 82F today, in my area of Southern CA. I wore shorts for the first time this year. There is obviously no snow locally. There is snow less than 2 hours away, at 10k+ elevation mountains. However, it’s the least snow I can ever recall for end of January. I’m planning to head out to grassy mountain plateau area next week, and I expect to see green grass without snow.
I lived 60+ years in the midwest through blizzards and subzero temps and sleet and ice et al. It’s been over 10 years away and I haven’t missed snow for a second!
We bought a snow plowed when we first moved out to the suburb. My then H was so inept with it that I hired someone to plow our driveway. The agreement was they would plow whenever we got x inches of snow. Sometimes when we had a lot of snow, mit would them a while to get to us.
I used to have to leave at 6:30am to go to work, so I would park my suv at the end of the driveway whenever we had snow.
Yeah, I am glad I don’t have to worry about it any more.
@Marilyn and others…we are enjoying our last day of down under summer…90 degrees and sunny. Tomorrow we fly home to the frozen tundra! I have layers of clothes I’m packing in my backpack so I don’t look like too much of a fool here when departing!
I interpret the thread title as a literal question (Are you getting ready for snow?), rather than the thread just being limited to persons with upcoming snowstorms. I grew up in the northeast and am familiar with snowstorms, shoveling the driveway, losing power, waiting for the bus in subzero temperatures, etc. It’s nice to see the snow a few days per year, but I wouldn’t want to have weeks on end with that type of weather.
Ok, but there are 268 posts dedicated to terrible ACTUAL winter conditions of snow, ice, frigid temps - and at least east of the Rockies, that winter weather was the talk of the town last weekend! Which just by reading a few posts, I think the gist is there!
I’m the OP. My intent was “getting ready” which is about something that will be happening…not something that has already happened. Although…if you did something to prepare for the snowstorm last weekend (or the upcoming one this weekend) definitely post it!
Gym was closed this morning, so I just ran for an hour outside. It is already snowing. It was slow going, so I just enjoyed the time outside. Well mostly… running into the wind wasn’t as fun. I stuck to my main road which is in pretty good shape. Side streets not so much with the new snow on top of the couple of inches of icecrete. I was passed by some coworkers putting salt down. I was also passed by 6 cars that stunk of weed. It’s 7am on Saturday morning in a snowstorm for crying out loud. Afterwards I did a Core Video and now am in my recliner with its heating pad and hot chocolate and breakfast.
New Englanders (well, anyone, but they are there) - my son is planning to run his first marathon March 1st on Cape Cod. Is there any chance the snow is gone by then?
After dealing with the 16-18 inches last Sunday, I am welcoming the “coating to 1” predicted for THIS Sunday. We are not close enough to Cape Cod to get much snow out of this one.
Looks like the snow will bypass the DC area this weekend, but the bitterly cold temperatures have definitely stopped by.
In other commentary, the ice chopper I ordered last Saturday (after @kelsmom mentioned such a thing exists!) has been sitting at UPS warehouse in Springfield, VA since this past Wednesday. Every day I get notice that it will be delivered today and every evening I get a notice that my delivery is delayed. Come on UPS, get it together.
And the snow shovel I ordered from Home Depot 4 days before last weekend’s snow storm–it hasn’t even been shipped yet, although they were supposedly in stock locally when I ordered it. Grrr.
Thank you! I am torn on what I want - it’s hard for him to train right now given how cold and how much snow there is (he’s in Worcester) and the day after the marathon he has a 9:00AM final in his hardest class (he’s at WPI, so they are in quarters which is why the final is so early. Typically finals are Thurs and Fri, so he was surprised by the Monday time). I’d rather he run a marathon when he’s had better training weather, warmer running weather, and no exam the next day. So I’m somewhat selfishly hoping that Hyannis has too much snow and they reschedule or refund. On the other hand, he’s been working really hard towards this and is so excited. I guess I just wish it were a month later.
It’s his game to play (race to run). You just get to be a bystander . I’m surprised that they have a marathon that early on the east coast but also unless it’s the inaugural of this race they have probably ran it that time of year before! In a marathon, you get what you get! To be honest, cold is better than extreme heat.
