Getting ready for snow this weekend?

I wouldn’t plan on a marathon being cancelled. The only way I see that happening is a blizzard on the day of.

It’s too hard and too expensive to cancel. You would have to refund all of the participants entry fees. After you’ve got all the permits, recruited volunteers, sponsors and bought all the things you need for a marathon. It’s a big undertaking and cancellations are very few and very far between.

Hope that he’s adequately trained and even if he’s not, he’s young and resilient lol!

Since Cape Cod is on the ocean, it’s probable that any snow that happens in March will quickly melt. BUT he should dress for chilly and possibly damp running conditions.

I’m agree that it would take extreme weather for this to be cancelled.

But be prepared for a chilly and damp feeling day. Hope it’s sunny!

It takes a whole lot to cancel a race. Covid. I know they cancelled a smaller one in DC when the government shut down. Oh and marine corps I believe cancelled after 9-11. They had it the year of the sniper though - I ran that one. But snow? No. Runners are hardy people.

I ran my first one while in college at age 18 after 6 weeks of training with one long run of 12 miles. I seriously didn’t know how long a marathon before that. It was on a Sunday in mid November in Columbus Ohio. My sister went with me as spectator. (The whole thing was her idea!) it didn’t snow on the race; but we had to drive back 7 hours in snow to VT afterwards and I had to go to a diff eq. Exam at 8am the next day. I did fine.

Be enthusiastic for your son. He will be fine!

I looked it up. Definitely not the first year. It’s a Boston Marathon qualifier, so that’s probably the reason it is March 1.

Qualifying window starts/ends in September. And you’d be hard pressed to find a road (non trail) marathon in the US that isn’t a Boston qualifier. But we are getting off topic.

Sorry for the topic diversion all - thank you for the insights and gentle reminders to calm myself down.. (FWIW he doesn’t know I’m worried, just you all.)

Please return to your regular snow discussion!

To help with that, here’s a picture from this morning, shortly after the snow started, at Clemson. I’ve been laughing at all the videos on social media and what the students are using as sleds. My son was laughing at the snow removal machines (apparently they’ve called out the street sweepers, which isn’t the most effective, but better than nothing.)

I’d say we got a good 5 maybe 6” today. It should be stopping soon. We got the jeep out and went to the casino for dinner. You know they’ll always be open lol. Not much else is.

And the shed isn’t big enough for the jeep, or any of our cars. it was turned into an office and then a man cave with a bar in the 1960s. Plus the concrete foundation doesn’t go the whole length of the shed. H had a VW bug that just barely fit, and since it’s been turned into our shed gym…

I’m always shocked to see a pool in the south uncovered in the winter! Such a juxtaposition with the snow!

Funny you post that - my son is thinking he’s going to do his first “team” bike race Feb 28th… We are in the mid Atlantic, but still seems like it will be pretty chilly to me.

from Facebook:
Wild scenes in South Florida… PILES of cold-stunned iguanas on the ground after falling from trees.

When temperatures dip into the low 40s, iguanas can become immobilized. Prolonged time in the 30s increases the risk of death for these cold-blooded reptiles.

You can eat iguanas. They are an invasive species so less the better.

I lived in the Philippines for a while as a kid and remember we were told never to eliminate any of the many geckos that adorned the walls inside our home because they ate all the bugs! And they really did. We never had bugs in our home (maybe a snake or two!). Now I have a quarterly bug man show up to keep them away but they aren’t doing so hot right now with the cold weather.

Geckos eat the bugs but iguanas eat the plants. They also eat the geckos.

The first gecko I saw after we moved to AZ was in our HOUSE! I thought it was a baby alligator and was ready to call the realtor until my friend told me why I should just consider it the ladybug of the desert. OK, but NOT in the house. DS got out his little bug catcher and re-homed it to the yard. I’ve calmed down since.
