Getting to know each other

Let’s know each other better before we meet @ Yale.

That’s a wonderful idea!

My name is Avital, and I’m a student in Portland, OR. I plan to be a double major in theater studies and English. I’m particularly obsessed with Shakespeare - both when studying his work analytically and performing it onstage. I also love musical theatre, swing dancing, reading British literature, and speaking in British accents for no particular reason. Okay, that’s a start. Now I’ve made a complete fool of myself. Your turn!

Ohh I LOVE BRITISH accent…But you see, I’m an Intl, so even American is hard for me:) Though I’ve heard that RP is actually hard for everybody. How did you learn it? anxious to know the secret

p.s. I’m an anglophile. Definitely going to study abroad @ Oxbridge - Yale has that. And Shakespeare sounds wonderful to me, especially the original version (kind of hard to read for an Intl though), but the Pasternak version is descent too. I particularly like “Midsummer Night’s Dream” for no sound reason… The sonnets, definitely… Oh, and although “Hamlet” might seem too cliche, it’s genial.

Oh, I adore Midsummer! And Hamlet’s the best. It’s Harold Bloom’s favorite, too, you know (professor at Yale.) Excuse my ignorance, but what’s RP? I’m thinking about a year at Oxford, too. Are you thinking about being an English lit major? Kind of hard for an international… but it would be an admirable undertaking.

I actually learned a British accent before auditioning for Mary Poppins in fifth grade. I watched Mary Poppins thrice a day (no kidding) for a month. Over the years, the accent’s been refined a little, and now I have a few different ones, actually. But I prefer upper crust (which is actually not very accurate for the general British population, but it sounds pretty.) This coming weekend, I’ll be representing the United Kingdom at a state-wide Model United Nations conference. Equipped with British accent, of course.

Heylo!

Dunno if I’m going to Yale yet, but it looks very likely, so I’d like to join in the whole getting-to-know ya discussion!

My name’s Wilma (bleh to all you people who recognize me from school :p) and I’m interested in doing their computers and psychology program. I’m from a nifty place in Maryland (close to D.C.). And I suppose I’m an anglophile, too! I love British music - Muse, Radiohead, Franz Ferdinand, even Depeche Mode (hehe, don’t laugh)! And I was lucky enough to have this crazy ten day “romance” (more like a quick hookup I suppose) with an older British tourist man who I just randomly met online! It was the weirdest but coolest thing ever. Nothing I’d ever do. Going to england to visit this summer! So I pick up quite a fake british accent every once in a while for fun.
Err, anyways, back to getting to know each other. Do you have screennames we can IM each other at? I use Yahoo IM, and my screenname is kornyhatemachine .

Where are you from elberet24?

Hi! 99% sure I am gonig to yale at this point so i thought i’d say hello too! lizzie, im from pennsylvania. i can claim affection for british accents as well  interested in politics/gov’t and psychology, in addition to the hard sciences ( with the sole exception of physics - no so fond of that)

screenname = lizzie416

although i’m not 100% sure I’m going to yale, I’m about 85% sure I am. Depends on the tours in the next couple of weeks. If you want to talk, you can im me at crapola000 (zeros)

hi! My name is sarah and I am 100% sure that I am going to yale next year. I’m from arizona and have lived here my whole life so I’m a little worried about the weather change but really excited to get to live on the east coast. I’m not possitive what i want to major in yet (although i am thinking about political science, economics, or psychology). hopefully i’ll get to meet some of you at bulldog days!

Hey all! My name is Jenny, and I live in the now-illustrious O.C. (Nobody who lives here refers to it as the O.C., but whatever.)
It seems that the class of 2009 is made up of a bunch of anglophiles cuz i’m an avid one myself! I very much dig the music (rock on Wilma!), the accent, and of course Shakespeare. =) And study abroad at Oxford or Cambridge!–I’m totally there.
I’m planning on double majoring in International studies and Anthropology, although I would like to pursue my interests in theater, especially musical theater, as well. I’ve been in show choir forever, so I’m really excited about Yale’s acappella groups and dance team.
I’m also into political science, environmental studies, and English.

oh i’m from southern CA, i guess I’ll be seeing some of you on the 9th

I am very pleased to be hearing about all these anglophiles as I go to school in the UK and have the much sought-after…British Accent! I used to have an american one, but it got contaminated almost immediately when I arrived in the UK.
I had a very tough choice between Oxford (PPE) and Yale and am really looking forward to starting off in New Haven next year!
My two main interests are journalism and debating.
I’m also really into politics and if I had to pick a major today, I’d choose Political Science, but who knows what might happen between now and the deadline for finalising a choice of major…

lol, finalizing**!!! Welcome to America!

a british accent!!!

Guy from the OC here too. Mission Viejo to be exact
Im pretty sure I’ll be a bulldog next year

I just decided! And I hadn’t been back to this thread since my last post - my, I’m excited now! We can start a “We love the UK” club at Yale and have high tea and such :stuck_out_tongue:

Anyway, I’m really excited to meet you all next year. And if anyone wants to talk before then, my sn is britsingerdoll

"“We love the UK” club at Yale and have high tea and such "

:):) I THOUGHT ABOUT THAT. Definitely. Don’t think they have anything like that… Secret Society of Anglophiles with 5 o’clock tea and very exclusive membership;)
BTW what is sn? (i’m an intl so forgive my ignorance)

It’s no problem - I didn’t know until a few months ago. An “sn” is a screen name, for AOL instant messenger. Get one, and we can chat! www.aim.com

oh, thanks. BTW do you have msn?

No… sorry!
