@Riversider I was, to use a phrase i despise, out of my high school boyfriends league. My parents, bless them, never said a word until long after the relationship had ended.
If they said anything about him not being good enough for me or whatever when we were together, I probably would’ve stayed with him longer out of stubbornness.
I have been welcoming and friendly to anyone S introduces me to, and try not to act as if I am making any assumptions or put pressure on the relationship if it is a GF.
Alas, early in the fall his GF of 2+ years with whom he had been living dumped him. He was heartbroken and homeless. Both families got along really well. We all assumed that this was it. I thought of her pretty much as a daughter in law, or at least a DIL-to-be.
Now I can’t communicate with her in any way without deeply upsetting S, who has struggled with getting over her. I did reach out with a simple text and said I was thinking of her and hoped she was well. I told S, and he said it was okay.
My sister, who has 4 Ds, told me that she had learned over the years not to put too much stock in any relationship. People sometimes wonder why parents can seem a little distant…the reality is that maybe we don’t want to get our hearts broken, either. And we are in a very powerless position.
