Just as a disclaimer, I will be posting this in a few forums.

A very close friend of mine is trying desperately to find herself a college. Unfortunately, the type of schools she likes aren’t very likely to admit her, so i’m hoping for some help

She has a 3.3 uw GPA, is ranked in the top 25% of her class (approx 100/441). She got a 25 on her ACTs and a 4 on APUSH and 3 on AP Psych. No ec’s, no volunteer, her essay will be okay(she’s not a very good writer) but her recs should be good

She really really wants a college with small classes and more females than males. She really liked Sarah Lawrence.

Wow Rocket. If I had a close friend who put out a thread characterizing me as having midget abilities I’d be pretty unhappy–particularly since her grades and scores are hardly bad.

Sarah Lawrence is beautiful, but not a school for somebody that’s not a very good writer. They don’t use standardized tests, but you send in a graded writing sample. The 3.0 to 3.3 (GPA) thread really has some nice discussions. You can also look at the Under 3.5 GPA thread.

Search College Navigator for small schools with ACTs where 25 is average. Most institutions it seems to me have more females than males, so that shouldn’t be a constraining factor.

Sarah Lawrence does not look at test scores so the ACT is irrelevant. The GPA is much lower than a typical admit so this is a big reach. The school is heavily into writing and requires samples of written schoolwork. Other than the male/female ratio and the small classes I’m not sure what the attraction is with this school. Consider Hampshire although that may still be a reach.

I am huge SLC hopeful, and I disagree that this is a huge reach GPA-wise. They have accepted students with 2.0’s before.

… However, they must have had VERY strong writing abilities and great reccomendations… those are both huge factors for SLC applicants. If your friend is not a strong writer/does not enjoy writing, this is definitely not the school for her. Conferences papers total from anywhere to 20-50 pages, and thats in every class. So I dont think her GPA is of huge concern, but if the writing doesn’t come through and her academic background isn’t strong, she won’t be highly considered at all.

Hampshire would be a better fit if she likes the SL system… however, they still do have a large focus on writing. From what I hear, it’s just not as academically intense.

Oh and SATs/ACTs will not be considered. The admissions personally told that they physcially put the scores in the shredder if they are sent – it is of zero relevance.

I’d still say right in line for Elon. I don’t know too much about Colby except for the fact that it is 90-ish on USNWR LAC list and rounds out the diversity of my list.
