girls run the honors classes.

hahaha gatordan, you’re too funny hun.

Well actually chemical engineering (at least at MIT) is 60% female…Nobody’s ever told me that I shouldn’t go into math/sci/tech fields…certain things just appeal more to females…let’s not force us to get involved in things we don’t like.

Sorry, I didn’t mean that to be taken too literally. But seriously, I’ve never gotten any impression that people think engineering is any less feminine than other non-stereotypically-female profession, except in the sense that yes, men are on AVERAGE a bit better at the skills required. (And no one I’ve met in person is even willing to admit THAT. The difference in the mean is, of course, almost negligibly tiny; what accounts for the vast differences in the numbers of “famous” mathematicians and scientists is the greater male variance. But I’ll stop on this topic just before noting that I’m a girl ^.^)

The only career pressure I’ve ever felt is to go INTO math, because people are constantly telling me that as a girl I must feel pressured NOT to. In my mind there’s this nagging voice that says if I stopped now, on some survey somewhere I’d be used as evidence that a) I am such an incredible WIMP that I CARE what other people think, and b) there’s pressure stopping girls from going into math.

Frank, I couldn’t agree more with you.

From my personal experience, whenever I go to my relatives house and they ask about my grades, its always :what math class are you taking and whats your grade in it? It ticks me off too because I hate math even though Im good at it but I love science or english. They envision me to be a mathematician which I would hate

On another note, I think a female “mad” scientist in a lab coat would be uber sexy.

I like this topic

At my school there are more girls then boys in the advanced classes, and there is really only one kid (a boy) who i can see is obviously “gifted”

personally, I think it depends on the school and the overall environment that drives either the guys or the girls to do better. I am #3 in a class of 176 (?) and the everyone else in the top 5 are guys (I was the girl referred to earlier by JTC).
From my experience, there have been more guys in my AP history classes… last year AP stats had many more guys, but as for other math classes, girls tended to equal the guys in numbers.
I guess it all just depends.
I think after freshmen year, guys tend to really step it up and that’s when you see all of them start rising in the ranks.

Is this gonna turn inot a boys v girls thread? =P :)

Anyway, ya, girls are everywhere, but I ain’t complaining. ;)

lol lol
that’s the spirit

Girls at my old school seemed much more motivated than the guys, and their grades were better too. In my class of 422, 8 out of the top 10 were girls (I was #6), including the class valedictorian. Girls take more honor classes, APs, participate more in extracurricular activities, and were more involved in general.

I was browsing since I last posted, and I think it made sense to me.

Guys are better under the pressure.

In sports yes, in music no.

Under the pressure, yes, because they’re more in control of their emotions, hahaha.

Me, I’m going into chem engineering because I love chem and also like the real-world applications. Also because I look hot in my lab coat and goggles  Oh and the 30/70 % girl/guy ratio overall in engineering.

My question is, why isn’t there a huge push to get more guys into humanities? All the whiny feminists are trying to shove science and tech down our throats, meanwhile there are 3 guys in my lit class…

MY APUSH teacher attributed the trend to the feminist movement and the “You go girl!” mentality that has been adopted by society in its treatment of women while for males society values their success based on such things as athletic prowess instead of academics and grades.

Guys just don’t have the attention span that girls do!!! We guys always get distracted by stuff and can never concentrate on schoolwork.

Or maybe thats just me.;)

^^It’s usually the girls that are distracting us. You girls just HAVE to sit in front of me and wear that thong, and make it so clearly visible when you bend over your desk to work. I think you’re just trying to break my concentration.

It’s a conspiracy I tell you.

my theory about why more guys arent pushed into artst careers is because there’s more need for science/math careers. they want more boys and girls in science/math expecially when we are at such an influential point in technological development.

At my school it’s mainly the girls who are smart. Like for the smartest people in my grade most of them are girls and only a handful are guys. Like maybe 8 out of 20. Something like that.

Also they are the ones who rule the clubs and if they don’t rule it now in future years they will rule it. It’s just so annoying. The same people are the heads of all the clubs. How are people supposed to get leadership positions if the same people keep taking them all? Like there’s this one girl (this is kind of an extreme example) she’s captain of JV cheerleading, class president and soon to be president of Key Club and Debate.

Yeah so anyway at my school in terms of smart people there are more girls than guys. But those guys are usually smarter than most of the girls.

It’s a known statistic at my school that in the top 10% of my class of 790, there are about 55 girls.

Guys we’ve got to step it up. I don’t want them taking over.

“Me, I’m going into chem engineering because I love chem and also like the real-world applications. Also because I look hot in my lab coat and goggles Oh and the 30/70 % girl/guy ratio overall in engineering.”

lol

“My question is, why isn’t there a huge push to get more guys into humanities? All the whiny feminists are trying to shove science and tech down our throats, meanwhile there are 3 guys in my lit class…”

I’m not really sure, but I think it might have to do with the fact that humanities also used to be male-dominated. In fact, there still are many males in humanities

Second, I agree with trader that there is more need for science stuff. I think people see science as more useful than humanities (no offence to humanities majors)

Third, I don’t think the culture and the media regard humanities as unmasculine as much as it regards science as unfeminine.

well, if you look at rates in college, women nearly always outnumber men. I would like to say that it is because we are smarter, but it is really because there are many more blue-collar jobs for men than there are for women. Many men do not choose to go to college (or apply themselves in school) because they know that they can make a good living without one.

I love it when people start saying that so-and-so sex/race/religion is smarter than another, since there’s no scientific backing to that whatsoever (not even genetic… at least yet).

I like my classes packed with girls by the way. (I wouldn’t even mind it if I were the only boy… actually, that would be fairly interesting)
