My friend is really having a hard time at college. She’s a math major at a private college…I feel bad because its hurting her so bad. I mean she doesn’t drink or anything…its just the pressure and expectations of college. She’s stressed out all the time and all she does is study. She says college isn’t fun and is constantly grumpy and mad.

My question is: Is there some type of medication that would help her? What sort of medicine would help?

She says she just wants to be happy and be able to get a handle on her school work.

Her school should provide access to counseling resources, which would entail meeting with certified professionals who are much more capable of addressing her needs than an internet message board.

and you don’t have to study ALL the time…you don’t have to be perfect in college…its ok to get a B once in a while…and your friend needs to find other things to do- clubs, plays, exercise…if she is only studying and still struggling, that means she isn’t studying smart

and hopefully she won’t resort to drugs to make her "happy’ she needs todo that herself…

She also needs to have a conversation with her advisor too. She may have taken on a courseload that is too demanding given her background. The solution may be to drop a course, drop to a lower level in a particularly challenging course, or, as mentioned above, live with a lower grade. Like citygirlsmom says, she needs to find some balance in her life and some friends to study (and study break) with. Too much stress isn’t healthy.

I don’t see why people think that meds can cure everything. Maybe she is stressed b/c she’s aiming for straight A’s. Maybe she needs friends. Maybe she isn’t in the right major. Meds don’t cure the problem, they just slightly mask it.

If she is having serious problems, then she should see a doctor. He might be able to give her a prescription for an anti-anxiety med.

Yeah give her some drugs thatll make everything perfect.

“Going crazy in college? Not crazy but mad.”

going mad and going crazy are the same thing? I think you mean angry. People get angry, and stressed its normal you dont need medicine for that. You have good intentions for your friend but telling her to take medication isnt the way.

I’ve given myself a quota of how many Bs I can have per year (currently it’s at 1/year), and I’ve used up my ENTIRE quota in a semester (3 Bs…ouch). Try “If I get another B, I’ll have failed myself.”…try that for stress. And I’m so neurotic I’m planning on taking 5 classes next semester, and on top of that, getting a part time job. Oh god, I’m going to die next year.

Why else am I up at 6AM on a sunday, other than to study?

On top of school, I have 2 years to get my LSAT up 35 points. Owie. I’m not a failure by any stretch of imagination…I just set myself up for it.

At least drop the part-time job. 5 classes is absurd. A part time job will only set you up for failure.

Also, one of the most important things that some people take for granted is rate my professors. An easy teacher can mean the difference between an A and a B. Sometimes a C. And no theres no honor in taking the HARD teacher. Remember, you’re looking out for your own interests.

yeh I know what you meant. Studying/working till 12am everyday including weekend sucks. I can’t wait for spring break so I can finally have my long awaited weekend.
