Going into chemistry. Math HL or English HL??

I’ve heard that universities look highly on writing ability, etc. but I don’t have room for both of them… so, which is more important in your opinion?

I think your writing ability should be reflected in your ACT Writing score, assuming you have taken it. I would take Math, because it has more to do with my interest and intended major. If you plan on being an English major, take English.

If you’re more of a science person and know you’re going into chemistry, go with Math HL. Math and chemistry are related (obviously Math HL is much more complicated math than you’ll need for chemistry, but it’s helpful anyway), so it’s a better choice if you want to go to a science school like MIT.

Have you taken/done well in rigorous English classes in the past, though? If your schedule is weighted down with a lot of science (I know “weighting down” a schedule either way is tough in IB because of the requirements, but it can be done) then I’d probably suggest English HL to make your schedule a little better rounded.

If that’s not the case, though, I’d say Math HL. (Make sure you like math, though. I’ve heard that class really sucks if you don’t like math.)

What other HLs are you taking?

Math SL Methods is essentially precal/calc AB, so it’s by no means a slacker option. HL math is supposed to be a b*tch. We don’t even offer it at my school.

See, do whichever least bores you as the HL. I don’t figure any colleges are gonna ever at any point read your application “Hmmm Math HL instead of English HL! (or vice versa) DENIED!” Don’t sweat the little things in this, either way you’re taking an advanced class.

Now for me, I’m taking Math SL and English HL. If it were up to me I’d switch the two (but if it were really up to me I’d switch History HL for Math SL). English HL for me is kinda easy, I’ve read the books, wrote my essays, did awesome on the oral, and am just waiting for the test. But Math SL seems to be going so freakin’ slow. I’m a math person so that’s probably why, I just get bored and I feel like AP Calculus was harder. But the IB courses are very rigid at my school, the only leeway we get is in how high spanish (Spanish HL-A or Spanish HL-B, woo…big diff, and I didn’t get to choose that either this year). Math SL is the highest they offer and I’m bored half the time (you get to choose math too, but it’s Math SL or Math Models). English HL is a lot of fun, I really like my teacher so that might differ, but still it’s not terribly hard. Just the essays (only 2 and they’re easy), readings, analysis of poems (which isn’t even that big a deal) and shorts, and a random oral. All is doable. Oh and the test.

So I say whichever you’d be less bored in because taking an HL requires more attention. It’s why I hate HL history because history bored me and I can’t find interest in it now to make myself study or bother. English HL is fine because I like reading and analysis but I really like math.
