Frankly it’s a waste of three hours of life. Most of these people kept silent about Harvey W until it was “safe” to comment. There’s even a picture of Opraha kissing him. Good luck with that.
Well it was the most inspiring three hours of my life for 2018. Keeping my glass half full whenever I can.
I think Oprah’s speech was great and I wish it would have been delivered on a different platform, because for the most part it was typical Hollywood posturing. So yes, times they are a changing, but when push comes to shove “movies and TV” will be based on their collective merit and box office success and not on the gender of the director or the actors. The “fashion” reason was silly…so Dolce and Gabbanna in black is more worthy than something in blue or red to make women more powerful? They had a platform and they used it but it felt to me like the ■■■■■ cat hats…sorta silly.
Truly inspiring. Women rock. We need to rule the world. It would be a much better place.
And because I can be shallow at times (a shocker, I know) - was Frances Mcdormand auditioning for a part in The Handmaid’s Tail?
They would have been braver wearing the hats, looking ridiculous instead of beautiful black dresses to make their point. Not really a risk when everyone is doing the same thing.
If women ruled the world (which they should), I envision it would be like the island of Themyscira, from Wonder Woman. Except we wouldn’t all be beautiful, tan and muscled.
What is silly to me is that we spend time criticizing dresses over content.
Are all the pink ribbons, yellow ribbons, etc. silly too?
Sorry just irks me that from our arm chair we can criticize (criticize is different than agreeing or disagreeing) an organized effort of public awareness. These we not just people who got a text message Sunday morning saying “hey! if you want to support #metoo #timesup wear black tonight - see ya at the show!” Actresses chose people who have come forward to be their +1. Speeches were prepared. Social media was FULL (at least my feed was) of affirming messages and explanations of the effort.
That’s my opinion. While wearing my black sweater and tights today.
I rarely watch the award shows but D21 wanted to watch so I saw most of it with her. I liked the all black and thought most people did a pretty good job of balancing regular acceptance speeches with the social/political stuff. I love Aziz Ansari, haven’t watched Master of None in a long time so will go catch up now. I didn’t like that James Franco held back the original guy from The Room when he tried to go to the microphone, I thought he would at least let him say something at the end. I loved the Winona Ryder commercial and the Princess Bride commercial.
Oh, and for people that say it was a waste of three hours (not just on here but on my Facebook as well), why did you watch it at all? I guess I can see watching the beginning if you weren’t sure how it was going to go (although these awards shows always lean the same way), but why continue and watch all three hours? I know someone who works for Trump. Within minutes he was on Facebook saying how much he hates Hollywood. I wonder why he watched at all but also wonder how he could be so mad so quickly - maybe the one Trump joke got to him too much.
I was on vacation over the Holidays in the Hollywood area. Amazed on seeing all the homeless people looking for food to eat and shelter. What are all the millionaire Hollywood celebs doing for them? Why I can applaud their efforts of “public awareness” is it more important than people starving all around the world?
How do you know they aren’t contributing to services that help the homeless? It is possible to care about more than one thing at a time.
Also, the movie industry isn’t all centered around the location of Hollywood, CA, these days nor do all the actors, etc. live there.
The homeless problem in our country is a complex one that requires more than just $ unfortunately to fix it. Many suffer from mental illness and/or drug/alcohol issues. A good chunk of them are veterans.
What are you doing in your community to help those on the streets?
I did not watch all 3 hours - much to do in my house on Sunday night - but had it on in the background to hear what Oprah had to say. The black was very “elegant” as only Hollywood can do, but as a statement, not so much LOL. If “Hollywood” wants to take up this as a cause so be it. I’m sure there are other industries that could take up other causes collectively…would not be a bad thing for the country. As far as “all women all the time”…no thanks…everyone knows that I rather like men – working with men, raising men, being married to a man and the fact they are different than me, emotionally, physically and socially and many other “lly”. Heaven help us if we were all the same. Yuck.
I didn’t watch last night, but listened to Oprah’s speech this morning. Wow, what a speech, I was literally in tears.
I am happy that the Committee to Protect Journalists is getting $1 million from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. I’ve been supporting them this past year, too.
I see nothing wrong with them devoting this night to trying to stop sexual harrassment – it is also a valid cause.
Golden Globes are still televised? Haven’t watched any of the award shows in at least 10 years.
A nice political donation made by the Hollywood Foreign Press.
In regards to the sexual harassment. I must of missed it. Did they discuss the sexual harassment of men by women in the work place? Or they just don’t think that happens.
Yes, you must have missed it. Or unheard it. They sure did. Harassment regardless of gender, age, ethnicity. Also credit given to the men who have and will stand for respect and equality for all regardless of gender, age, ethnicity moving forward.
I flipped it on and off over the three hours. I put shows on like that to be entertained not to have a topic, any topic, shoved down my throat.
That’s the problem, can’t please everyone.
“You’re a rich actor, how about you use some of your millions to help others?!”
“You’re a rich actor - your job is to act and entertain me and nothing more.”
It’s hard for me to imagine those having a platform to use their voice NOT use it to help others. And not supporting that. Did you hear the message that their message was not just for actors but for housekeepers, firefighters, teachers, people in health care - EVERYBODY? That was said more than once.
A new phrase was used over and over last night in the speeches. “Their truth”. “Women telling their truth”.
What the heck does that mean? Truth is truth. It is fact. There is no ‘your truth’ or ‘my truth’. There is only the truth.
I think what they meant was “women telling their experiences” or “women expressing their feelings”.
I hate buzz words and phrases that aren’t clear but become trendy and then over-used.
Fine, then @TatinG. They were saying THE truth: that all-too-painfully-often men in power sexually harass and exploit women, in Hollywood and elsewhere. And yes, sometimes the tables are reversed. The “time’s up” campaign basically says, “enough.” And the money raised by this action will help fight sexual harassment in many other work places, not just entertainment related.
Is that clearer?
