I enjoyed the Golden Globes tremendously. I knew there would be politics involved. Didn’t everyone? I’m sure some of the Trump supporters out there were not watching this show. There’s lots to watch on television and it’s easy to change the channel. I was inspired not only by Oprah, but by Kerry Washington, Nicole Kidman, Natalie Portman etc. It was a great opportunity for them to get their message out. I also loved listening to Seth Meyers and watching some of my favorite tv and movies get recognized with awards.
You and I have no idea what she knew about those men when she gave those standing ovations.
Last week, the podcast Pod Save America interviewed Seth Meyers, who was at the time preparing to host the Golden Globes. He made it clear that he was expected to make jokes about #TimesUp and wanted to do so.
He remarked that his comments at a White House Correspondent’s Dinner supposedly made President Trump run for office. The hosts joked that in the Golden Globes, Meyers should pointedly insult some actors he secretly wants to become President. The group further joked that they should edit this segment out of the podcast so he could do the bit at the Golden Globes.
Well, they didn’t edit it out of the podcast. But he did the joke, first with Oprah Winfrey for President and then with Tom Hanks for Vice President.
MODERATOR’S NOTE:
OK, move on people. No need to get defensive and criticize other users. Focus on the telecast please.
I don’t see why Hollywood actors/producers et al speaking out against sexual harassment should be considered “political” anyway. Why wouldn’t people of ALL political persuasions be in agreement? What is there to “disagree” about with regard to sexual harassment in the workplace, or anywhere else for that matter?
The arts and entertainment have always been political. It’s part of why they exist.
I thought it was really good. I do watch all the awards shows although Golden Globes have always been considered the frivolous awards show. I thought Seth Myers did a good job despite the tacky Harvey Weinstein joke, the Kevin Spacey ones didn’t bother me too much. Props to the Hollywood Foreign Press for their $1 million grants to the two very respected organizations and the fine speech delivered by their president.
Oprah’s speech was outstanding and the highlight of the evening for me. Just heard it re-broadcast on NPR.
I also thought many of the other speakers were eloquent, Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Elizabeth Moss and I thought it outstanding that the moments were shared by female activists and union leaders from many walks of life. I thought that the black dresses were actually an elegant fashion statement and I had my favorites - Nicole Kidman, Alicia Vikander, Rachel Brosnahan and others that were not, Kate Hudson, too revealing in my opinion especially considering the theme of the evening.
Loved Natalie Portman’s comment and Barbara Streisand addressing the lack of women directors.
Time’s Up… I agree. Women, we get the job done.
I also enjoyed the broadcast and all the speeches. I was particularly taken by Reese Witherspoon - she seems to have risen to some position of power in Hollywood. When she introduced Oprah, she sounded a little like Elle from Legally Blond. At first I just was thinking of her voice, then I considered the themes of that movie, and it all seemed to fit with the night.

I didn’t see all of the show, but I did watch the Oprah speech today on YouTube. That was such a beautifully delivered address. I loved it.
I noticed none of the women who brought the story out about HW were invited to the Golden Globes. Was this intentional?
Salma Hayek and Ashley Judd were there. There was certainly no reason for the Hollywood Foreign Press to invite all 84 of them, especially if they were not current or past nominees of this century. Although Mira Sorvino not being there does seem like a snub.

We wouldn’t really know if they were invited or not. It might just be a matter of if they decided/could attend.
Got to stop gaming so much while watching tv or I’ll miss things.
I liked seeing the bad guy from Big Little Lies. He seemed like such a sweet man last night on the show!
As to Weinstein accusers, In addition to Salma Hayek and Ashley Judd, Angelina Jolie was also there.
I thought “bad guy” (with a long different name…) from Big Little Lies looked so different! D2 said she still got creepy goosebumps seeing him there on stage for the first time after seeing the final episode of the show a couple weeks ago! Apparently he has played “bad guy” in several other productions.
Abasket- that was exactly my reaction! He looked so different and sounded different. He was so evil in the show. Talk about abusers…
I’m really at a loss at why people were applauding Tonya Harding…a woman who has now basically admitted that she was at some level aware in advance that something “was up” in advance of the attack on Nancy Kerrigan. SMH…
I think it was pretty well established 20 years ago she knew what was going on. A better question (s) might be why was she there and why was Allison Janney thanking her? Is a Golden Globe win that important?
