Golden Globes 2018

I don’t think anyone there thought it was poorly thought out. As a viewer, it didn’t bother me. I think this is just kicking up dust to try to detract from the issue they were drawing attention to.

I don’t think they really had to worry about that – given what we know now I suspect that the room was already full of them.

Although I support the cause that people were publicizing at the Golden Globes, if I were the Hollywood Foreign Press, I would be seriously angry because other people had hijacked my event for their own purposes.

It’s kind of like having your sister announce her pregnancy at your wedding. It detracts from the purpose you’re supposedly there for and that the hosts have paid for.

I doubt they mind. We’re talking about their awards show are we not? It’s publicity you can’t pay for.

Let’s be real. This is not the Knight of the Garter investiture ceremony; it’s the Golden Globes - the boozy, free-spirited cousin to the more serious award shows. I highly doubt that the HFPA is really “seriously angry.” People are talking about it; that’s PR that money can’t buy.

Wait, which activist +1 should have been supplanted by someone else? Which activist +1 wasn’t also a victim? Or are they less important victims because they aren’t celebrities?
The activist +1 people who were invited may never have the opportunity to attend the Golden Globes again. The various actresses (who I do agree it would have been nice to see there as well) May have future opportunities to attend a future Golden Globe and do have opportunities to have interviews and cameras and attention focused on what they are saying.

Not to derail – but I was reading the Tom & Lorenzo discussion about the fashion on the red carpet and came across a discussion about Rita Moreno, who was a guest of Norman Lear.

You know – Rita Moreno, 86-year-old powerhouse of stage and screen, living legend, one of only 12 EGOT winners (and also, Rita Moreno, who totally rocked her red carpet look.) The NY Times captioned her picture with Norman Lear as “Norman Lear and a guest.” AAAHHHHHHHH!

Granted, they caught the mistake and corrected it within the hour. But still…

I did like Norma Lear’s tweet in response: “TheRitaMoreno and guest”

Make no mistake, the people complaining about it should have been this guest there and not that one would be complaining about something else if they had brought that one instead of this one.

Rita looks smashing!

164. In that case people really shouldn't take seriously what happens during the show?

165. The fact is I'm not sure and this is just my opinion not everyone knows who was or wasn't a victim with the activist +1. The fact is people turn on the Golden Globes to see celebrities. Would there be more interest in seeing Dad2020 host the show than Seth Meyers? Of course not.

MODERATOR’S NOTE: Dad2020 is no longer with us since he ignored warnings and posts from moderators.

Does anyone know what the ratings were like for this awards show compared to other recent Golden Globes? I feel like there was a lot more publicity and discussion about this one in comparison to recent years. That makes me suspect a significant number of people were tuned in beyond only seeing celebrities. I thought it was pretty cool to see celebrities bring in (frankly, IMO heroic) non celebrities and give them a platform. Loved seeing the celebrities and non celebrities together and working towards a shared goal.

19 million viewers vs. 20MM last year,
5.0 rating (18-49) vs. 5.6 LY

Thanks @skieurope I was googling too. It looks like that might be comparing this year’s early numbers to last year’s final numbers, if I understand these things correctly. It looks likely this year is slightly down but hard to tell yet how significantly. https://www.google.com/amp/www.chicagotribune.com/entertainment/envelope/ct-golden-globes-tv-ratings-20180108-story,amp.html

Another report on the numbers - not from Fox News.

In the industry, the GG’s are know as the awards “party” and aren’t taken quite as seriously (though obviously still an honor).

Also another comment on #timesup - it doesn’t apply to just harassment in the sexual or physical form. Also applies to pay scale, opportunities for executive roles (producing, etc.) and that kind of thing. It’s sort of natural these days to default to the sexual harassment - but it’s more than that.

I agree with this. I’ve never watched the Golden Globes before, but when they were talking about the protest ahead of time (wearing black, raising money, etc), I got interested and decided to tune in. Then enjoyed it for the show and the protest both. I’d probably watch again just for the awards. And I thought Kerry Washington looking especially amazing!

I find it particularly sad that people would say, “why invite Mira Sorvino (or X actress) when she hasn’t done much in the past 20 years”, when the reason why “she hasn’t done much” was the blacklisting and general sliming done by HW.

^^^^I agree with that, although I think expecting GG to invite every woman who has accused HW of sexual harassment is unreasonable. This is an awards show, not a show whose explicit mission is to address the HW scandal. Sexual harassment has apparently been rife in the industry, and it was addressed at length during the awards show, whether or not doing so was at the direction of the HFP or the show’s producers/writers. Making it only about HW would not make sense, imo.

Not every woman, but they could have invited at least one activist. Inviting Rose McGowan or Asia Argento would have averted some of the backlash the program has faced on social media and elsewhere for ignoring victims. I actually prefer keeping awards shows about the art, but if the Golden Globes are going to use the program to shine a light on social issues then they should clarify their message. I still don’t understand why Tonya Harding was there and applauded. A woman who was involved in an attack on another woman should not have been present in lieu of someone like Mira Sorvino.

Here is an article about the mixed signals the program was sending by having known harassers wearing Time’s Up pins. https://www.thecut.com/2018/01/the-whispers-were-deafening-at-the-golden-globes.html

@stardustmom, it was already speculated earlier that TH was not invited by the GG per se, but by one of the nominated actors or producers of the movie about her. Why she was applauded is a very good question, though. If I were Nancy Kerrigan, I would have been livid about that.
